DAY 7 OF 20

Spiritually Tired

I volunteered to lead the men’s group of our new church on an eight-week study guide titled Life Healing Choices. I wasn’t sure if the men would connect or open up, given our short time together as a church.

We were feeling our way until we got to the third session about disappointments and hurts. Billy, the youngest, shared, “I am deeply disappointed with myself. I expected to be farther down the road with my faith. I should have been doing more for the Lord.”

Ken followed, and with tears streaming down his cheeks said, “I still grieve the loss of my older brother. He taught me everything. If only my two boys would have met him." Anthony told how he regretted not playing sports with his father and said, “When I get to heaven, the first thing I want to do is play catch with my dad.” I, too, wanted to share my struggle, but a part of me didn’t want to be honest. What would they think of their pastor? Yet I knew the moment was right. I mustered the courage and said, “I am spiritually tired. The pastoral ministry is taking a toll on me.”
Ken softly responded, “Pastor, I have been concerned about your well being.”
Peter quickly added, “We’re here to help you.”

At the end of the meeting the guys gathered around and prayed for me.

I have been in many groups, but this one was really special for me. I had found a band of brothers who helped me with my burden in a nonjudgmental and caring spirit. The last thing I expected was that these men, who I was supposedly leading, would deepen my faith through their unconditional love and care for me.

Dear Lord, thank You for these brothers in Christ who help carry my burdens.
