There's Hope For Today

DAY 295 OF 366

The valet of the late Kaiser Wilhelm II said, “I cannot deny that my master was vain. He had to be the central figure in everything. If he went to a christening, he wanted to be the baby. If he went to a wedding, he wanted to be the bride. If we went to a funeral, he wanted to be the corpse.”

I’ve met a few little Kaisers in my time. They belong to the “hurt class” of people in a church. The “hurt class” is constantly offended, continually whining, forever needy, never happy, and always finding fault. They would portray themselves as perpetual victims, but their discontent is rooted in their longing for attention.

Since they cannot have “center stage,” they draw whatever spotlight they can manipulate. Foolishly, we rush in to try to give them a sense of security that can only be found in relationship with the Lord. We wonder why we can never give enough to these folks.

We wonder why they drain us so. We wonder why, for all our efforts, no progress is made. The answer is simple: only Jesus can anchor a drifting soul, and our labored efforts are a sorry substitute.

Insecurity that is not remedied by divine encounter will never be successfully treated through the greatest of human intention.
