There's Hope For Today

DAY 292 OF 366

Abandoned. Is there a greater terror than to be rejected and isolated? I’ve seen it in the red-rimmed eyes of a husband who came home to an empty house. I’ve seen it in the angelic face of a Russian orphan. I’ve seen it in a downcast worker, laid off after twenty-two years. I’ve heard it in the mournful cry of a woman who found the evidence of her husband’s intimacy with another. I’ve felt it in my heart as a couple left my office, and the church. Abandoned.

People walk away for a great number of reasons. Sometimes it’s for self-preservation. Sometimes it’s for selfishness. Sometimes it’s for the better. Most times, it’s for the worse.

Jesus’ prayer for the church was that the Father “make us one.” We are made for relationship, not rejection. Running is always easier than wrestling through hardship. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence – but it’s not your grass. We would do well to emulate the Father who demonstrates fidelity though we wander. It is the message that Jesus held until His last minute here on earth (Matthew 28:20).

When you want to run from trouble, run to the Word instead. Faith and flight have little in common. Short-term relief comes at a very high price.
