There's Hope For Today

DAY 286 OF 366

This morning I listened to a great missionary. Far removed from friends and family, he labors in a dangerous and deprived location. He knows few creature comforts. His life is consumed with one compelling purpose: to get people to Jesus.

The missionary’s message awakened awareness in me to the compartmentalized nature of my life. When the day’s work is done, I go home to predictable comforts. I am surrounded by plush. I am enveloped in plenty. Though I am always accessible through telephone, it is not difficult to leave the office at the office. Though I respond to occasional emergencies, I enjoy a life of ease when measured against the life of my missionary colleague. I know that God called me to this home field, but I must never make the fatal error of divorcing myself from the missionary endeavor.

We are all missionaries. The passion that drives a missionary into the frontier should drive us into the heart of our fallen culture. Spiritual fulfillment can only be found as the great commission infuses everything we say and do with life-giving power.

If I cannot relate to the life of my missionary friend, I must go first to my knees – then, to my world.
