Get Excited About Reading the Bible!Sample
FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU
Developing a daily Bible reading habit isn’t that much different from developing an exercise routine. And I once heard someone say that even though there are thousands of different exercises and exercise programs, this is the most effective one: the one you’ll do.
In the same way, the most effective daily devotional plan is the one you’ll do! That means you have to like it and even look forward to it. Don’t set unrealistic goals for yourself—instead set yourself up for success.
If you’re sharper in the evening than the morning, do your devotionals then. If lunch hour works best for you, great. If you like pretty things, set up a “devotional corner” with your favorite chair, candle, decorations, and notebooks to make it a place you love. If you like coffee, treat yourself to a delicious brew that you drink while you’re having your devotions.
If you don’t love to read, download an audio Bible or use the YouVersion app. Memorize key verses to get them down into your heart. I often take one Scripture from my daily reading that stood out to me, write it on a card, and carry it around with me so I can meditate on it during the day (you can do it on your phone, too). One person I know puts Scriptures in their daily reminders, so it pops up periodically during the day and they can stop and think about it.
I recommend reading through the Bible every year. There are a lot of different programs you can use in order to do that (just type “Bible reading programs” into your search engine and you’ll see!). I use one that’s in the front of my Bible, but the whole point is that I just do better when there is a prescribed plan to follow.
Was this plan helpful to you? It was adapted from my book “Closer Than You Ever Imagined: Experiencing the Deep Relationship With God You Always Wanted.” You can read the first part here.
