Samen met Maria, zijn zwangere vrouw, verliet hij Nazareth in Galilea om zich te laten inschrijven. Toen zij in Bethlehem waren, moest Maria bevallen. Zij bracht haar eerste kind ter wereld, een jongen. Zij wikkelde hem in doeken en legde hem in een voerbak, want in de herberg van het dorp hadden Jozef en Maria geen onderdak kunnen vinden.
