Fast 40: Practicing the Ancient Spiritual Discipline of Lent

DAY 18 OF 41

It is interesting that Scripture says “truth” holds up our spiritual armor. Aquinas said, “God is not only true, but truth itself.” In that sense, Truth holds everything together.

But if we look at our society today, everything is falling apart because we no longer believe in God, and therefore, we no longer believe in truth. Modern people say, “This is my truth,” as though they are God. But in a general sense, truth is just another name for reality—what exists, whether we like it or not.

Because the Devil is “a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44), a Christian must fight fantasy with reality. That is why Christian civilization has historically defended the fundamental truth of God’s existence, along with the reality of nature, natural law, and science.

However, truth extends beyond the objective and into the subjective—into the heart of the individual. Psalm 51:6 says, “You desire truth in the inward parts,” and that emphasis is how the “belt of truth” works best. When we are truthful with ourselves—when we refuse to live in self-deception—we are better equipped to recognize the Devil’s deception.

Truth not only holds our world together, but it also holds our lives together. It holds our minds together. Our thoughts must be true. Our ideas must be true. Our motives must be true. We should be intolerant of any duplicity or hypocrisy in our lives because all spiritual passion begins with spiritual purity
