Catechism: Powerful & Faithful Deliverer

DAY 1 OF 3

In the 1960’s and 70’s, Hollywood action movies used quicksand as a go-to plot twist to create a disaster and trap a character. As the actor or actress struggled, they would sink deeper. If there wasn’t a vine or something around to grab onto, the scene would end with the character under the sand and their hat floating on top!

In actuality, quicksand is very rare and almost impossible to fully sink into. But the point that was made is true. There are situations and circumstances where we get stuck or find ourselves trapped. And though we struggle and fight, often we make it even worse. We need an outsider to come along to rescue us—to offer us help from solid ground.

King David knew what it was like to be stuck. He had been in some difficult situations throughout his life, and he learned to call out to God for help! In Psalm 40, David is trapped in a pit and has to wait patiently for the Lord to rescue him. God heard his cry for help, lifted him out of the quicksand, and set his feet on solid ground!

God is able to deliver his people—individuals like King David or entire nations like Israel. When we humble ourselves and call out for help, he is willing to come to our rescue.

As the Psalm continues, verse three says that others were watching as God rescued David. People are looking at our lives, and when they see God step into our situations and deliver us, they will also trust in God for their own deliverance!

Don’t get discouraged by your quicksand situation. Call out to God, and let him show up and show off. Your deliverance might just be the testimony that brings hope to people around you!

Consider: How did God rescue you from your pit? Have you ever told your story?

Reflect: As you consider how God has rescued you, take a few minutes to reflect on Psalm 40 and write down what stands out to you. Then offer your praise and thanksgiving to God for being your powerful and faithful deliverer.
