Prayer Can Change the Nation

Jonah was sent to proclaim God’s wrath over Nineveh because of their evil ways. But on hearing his words, the king passed a decree that everyone go on a fast, turn from their deeds and cry unto God for help. Even the animals were not to eat or even drink water. The whole of Nineveh was fasting! And God heard them. He was merciful to them and forgave them.
True repentance and prayer moves God’s heart. It causes Him to relent. He says so Himself in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
On the very first day that Jonah began to preach in Nineveh, the people believed him and began to mourn over their sins and turn away from them. That’s when the king heard about it and he himself laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. God caused the king’s eyes to be opened and his heart to be changed. He proclaimed and published a decree that both man and beast mourn in sackcloth and ashes.
That’s what can happen when we humble ourselves, pray, seek God and turn from our wicked ways. God is moved and He can change the hearts of our leaders. He can cause them to pass righteous judgments in our favor. We can be nation changers, if we become a praying people.
Today, let us not sit back as corruption, violence and injustice prevails. Instead, let us rise up in prayer and believe God to heal our land and set us free from poverty, bureaucracy and the exploitation of women.

Father God, I pray that You guide the hearts of our nation’s leaders in whichever way You want, so that we may live a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and dignity. Amen.
