Fast 40: Practicing the Ancient Spiritual Discipline of Lent

DAY 26 OF 41

In an ultimate sense, there are only two types of human love: love for God and love for the world. And that is a truth that will only grow truer as our experience grows grimmer.

The best practical example of love for the world is found in the religion of Humanism. It is the principle on which the entire modern world is built, and it’s the notion that Christopher Dawson (one of the greatest historians of the last century) put quite succinctly when he said, “To the true Modernist, man is the measure of all things, and the spirit of the age is the Spirit of God.”

Why are we seeing the erosion of truth? The corruption of beauty? The perversion of goodness? The decay of modern society and the rise of insanity? Because we have loved the world rather than God.

And we love the world whenever we use time as our ultimate test instead of eternity. We love the world whenever we say, “Times have changed,” or, “It’s 2023.” But the truth is that God doesn’t change.

Scripture says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). And when we face the winds of change and the waves of vicissitude, our only hope is found in the eternal anchor of Jesus Christ—whose Spirit is the “love of the Father.”
