From Distraction to Devotion: Finding Your Way Back to GodSample
Sign #2: Booked and Busy
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." - Matthew 6:33
It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of being “booked and busy.” Between work, school, family obligations, and personal goals, our calendars can quickly fill up, leaving little time for what matters most—our relationship with God. The busyness of life often leads us to neglect the quiet moments we need to spend with Him. But in both Matthew 6:33 and Luke 10:38-42, Jesus teaches us a vital lesson: we must make our relationship with God a priority above everything else.
In Matthew 6:33, Jesus encourages us to “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” When we prioritize God’s Will, everything else falls into place. Our careers, relationships, and daily needs are secondary to the Kingdom of God. When we seek Him first, He provides everything we need. Putting God first is crucial for maintaining a strong relationship with Him. As believers we don’t want to feel like spending time with God is a chore we need to add to our to-do list, instead, we want to make Him our first priority.
In Luke 10:38-42, we find the story of Martha and Mary. Martha was busy preparing and serving, while Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ Feet, listening to His Words. When Martha complained that Mary wasn’t helping, Jesus gently rebuked her, saying, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
This story illustrates the theme of prioritizing our relationship with God over the distractions of life. It shows us that while tasks and responsibilities are important, there is nothing more essential than spending time with Jesus. In the midst of our “booked and busy” lives, we must make time to sit at His Feet and listen to His Voice. Like Mary, we must choose the “better" part of life. Our tasks will always be there, but spending time with God is a decision we have to make intentionally.
In your current season, what are the things that keep you busy? How can you rearrange your schedule to prioritize time with God?
Prayer:
Lord, I confess that my schedule often gets the best of me, and I become so focused on the tasks at hand that I forget to seek You first. Help me to prioritize my relationship with You above all else. Teach me to trust that when I make You my priority, You will take care of everything else. Give me the Wisdom to choose the “better" part and make time for You each day. Amen.
