Psalms 41:5-9
Psalms 41:4-9 The Message (MSG)
I said, “GOD, be gracious! Put me together again— my sins have torn me to pieces.” My enemies are wishing the worst for me; they make bets on what day I will die. If someone comes to see me, he mouths empty platitudes, All the while gathering gossip about me to entertain the street-corner crowd. These “friends” who hate me whisper slanders all over town. They form committees to plan misery for me. The rumor goes out, “He’s got some dirty, deadly disease. The doctors have given up on him.” Even my best friend, the one I always told everything —he ate meals at my house all the time!— has bitten my hand.
Psalms 41:5-9 King James Version (KJV)
Mine enemies speak evil of me, When shall he die, and his name perish? And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity: His heart gathereth iniquity to itself; When he goeth abroad, he telleth it. All that hate me whisper together against me: Against me do they devise my hurt. An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: And now that he lieth he shall rise up no more. Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, Which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
Psalms 41:5-9 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
My enemies speak evil against me, “When will he die, and his name perish?” And when he comes to see me, he speaks falsehood; His heart gathers wickedness to itself; When he goes outside, he tells it. All who hate me whisper together against me; Against me they devise my hurt, saying, “A wicked thing is poured out upon him, That when he lies down, he will not rise up again.” Even my close friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
Psalms 41:5-9 New Century Version (NCV)
My enemies are saying evil things about me. They say, “When will he die and be forgotten?” Some people come to see me, but they lie. They just come to get bad news. Then they go and gossip. All my enemies whisper about me and think the worst about me. They say, “He has a terrible disease. He will never get out of bed again.” My best and truest friend, who ate at my table, has even turned against me.
Psalms 41:5-9 American Standard Version (ASV)
Mine enemies speak evil against me, saying, When will he die, and his name perish? And if he come to see me, he speaketh falsehood; His heart gathereth iniquity to itself: When he goeth abroad, he telleth it. All that hate me whisper together against me; Against me do they devise my hurt. An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him; And now that he lieth he shall rise up no more. Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, Who did eat of my bread, Hath lifted up his heel against me.
Psalms 41:5-9 New International Version (NIV)
My enemies say of me in malice, “When will he die and his name perish?” When one of them comes to see me, he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander; then he goes out and spreads it around. All my enemies whisper together against me; they imagine the worst for me, saying, “A vile disease has afflicted him; he will never get up from the place where he lies.” Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me.
Psalms 41:5-9 New King James Version (NKJV)
My enemies speak evil of me: “When will he die, and his name perish?” And if he comes to see me, he speaks lies; His heart gathers iniquity to itself; When he goes out, he tells it. All who hate me whisper together against me; Against me they devise my hurt. “An evil disease,” they say, “clings to him. And now that he lies down, he will rise up no more.” Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
Psalms 41:5-9 Amplified Bible (AMP)
My enemies speak evil of me, saying, “When will he die and his name perish?” And when one comes to see me, he speaks empty words, While his heart gathers malicious gossip [against me]; When he goes away, he tells it [everywhere]. All who hate me whisper together about me; Against me they devise my hurt [imagining the worst for me], saying, “A wicked thing is poured out upon him and holds him; And when he lies down, he will not rise up again.” Even my own close friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me [betraying me]. [John 13:18]
Psalms 41:5-9 New Living Translation (NLT)
But my enemies say nothing but evil about me. “How soon will he die and be forgotten?” they ask. They visit me as if they were my friends, but all the while they gather gossip, and when they leave, they spread it everywhere. All who hate me whisper about me, imagining the worst. “He has some fatal disease,” they say. “He will never get out of that bed!” Even my best friend, the one I trusted completely, the one who shared my food, has turned against me.
Psalms 41:5-9 The Passion Translation (TPT)
But those who hate me wish the worst for me, saying, “When will he die and be forgotten?” And when these “friends” come to visit me with their pious sympathy and their hollow words and with hypocrisy hidden in their hearts, I can see right through it all. For they come merely to gather gossip about me, using all they find to mock me with malicious hearts of slander. They are wicked whisperers who imagine the worst for me, repeating their rumors, saying, “He got what he deserved; it’s over for him! The spirit of infirmity is upon him, and he’ll never get over this illness.” Even my ally, my friend, has turned against me. He was one I totally trusted with my life, sharing supper with him, and now he shows me nothing but betrayal and treachery. He has sold me as an enemy.
Psalms 41:5-9 English Standard Version 2016 (ESV)
My enemies say of me in malice, “When will he die, and his name perish?” And when one comes to see me, he utters empty words, while his heart gathers iniquity; when he goes out, he tells it abroad. All who hate me whisper together about me; they imagine the worst for me. They say, “A deadly thing is poured out on him; he will not rise again from where he lies.” Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.
