ダビデはそれらを脱ぎすて、手につえをとり、谷間からなめらかな石五個を選びとって自分の持っている羊飼の袋に入れ、手に石投げを執って、あのペリシテびとに近づいた。 そのペリシテびとは進んできてダビデに近づいた。そのたてを執る者が彼の前にいた。 ペリシテびとは見まわしてダビデを見、これを侮った。まだ若くて血色がよく、姿が美しかったからである。 ペリシテびとはダビデに言った、「つえを持って、向かってくるが、わたしは犬なのか」。ペリシテびとは、また神々の名によってダビデをのろった。 ペリシテびとはダビデに言った、「さあ、向かってこい。おまえの肉を、空の鳥、野の獣のえじきにしてくれよう」。
