ダビデがサウルに語り終えた時、ヨナタンの心はダビデの心に結びつき、ヨナタンは自分の命のようにダビデを愛した。 この日、サウルはダビデを召しかかえて、父の家に帰らせなかった。 ヨナタンとダビデとは契約を結んだ。ヨナタンが自分の命のようにダビデを愛したからである。 ヨナタンは自分が着ていた上着を脱いでダビデに与えた。また、そのいくさ衣、およびつるぎも弓も帯も、そのようにした。 ダビデはどこでもサウルがつかわす所に出て行って、てがらを立てたので、サウルは彼を兵の隊長とした。それはすべての民の心にかない、またサウルの家来たちの心にもかなった。
