ダビデは朝はやく起きて、羊を番人に託し、エッサイが命じたように食料品を携えて行った。彼が陣営に着いた時、軍勢は、ときの声をあげて戦線に出ようとしていた。 そしてイスラエルとペリシテびととは戦列を敷いて、軍と軍と向き合った。 ダビデは荷物をおろして、荷物を守る者にあずけ、戦列の方へ走って、兄たちの所へ行き、彼らの安否を尋ねた。 兄たちと語っている時、ペリシテびとの戦列から、ガテのペリシテびとで、名をゴリアテという、あの戦いをいどむ者が上ってきて、前と同じ言葉を言ったので、ダビデはそれを聞いた。 イスラエルのすべての人は、その人を見て、避けて逃げ、ひじょうに恐れた。 イスラエルの人々はまた言った、「あなたがたは、あの上ってきた人を見たか。確かにイスラエルにいどむために上ってきたのだ。彼を殺す人は、王が大いなる富を与えて富ませ、その娘を与え、その父の家にはイスラエルのうちで税を免れさせるであろう」。
