かのペリシテ人は、四十日の間、朝な夕なやって来て、同じ所に立った。 さて、エッサイは息子ダビデに言った。「兄さんたちに、この炒り麦一エファと、このパン十個を届けなさい。陣営に急いで行って兄さんたちに渡しなさい。 このチーズ十個は千人隊の長に渡しなさい。兄さんたちの安否を確かめ、そのしるしをもらって来なさい。」 サウルも彼らも、イスラエルの兵は皆、ペリシテ軍とエラの谷で戦っていた。 ダビデは翌朝早く起き、羊の群れを番人に任せ、エッサイが命じたものを担いで出かけた。彼が幕営に着くと、兵は鬨の声をあげて、戦線に出るところだった。 イスラエル軍とペリシテ軍は、向かい合って戦列を敷いていた。 ダビデは持参したものを武具の番人に託すと、戦列の方へ走って行き、兄たちの安否を尋ねた。 彼が兄たちと話しているとき、ガトのペリシテ人で名をゴリアトという戦士が、ペリシテ軍の戦列から現れて、いつもの言葉を叫んだのでダビデはこれを聞いた。 イスラエルの兵は皆、この男を見て後退し、甚だしく恐れた。
