Touched by Grace - the Healing Miracles of JesusSýnishorn
The Powerful Touch
Luke 8:43-48 tells about a massive Capernaum crowd that surrounded Jesus. People were pressing on all sides, wanting to touch Him. A woman who had been bleeding for twelve years was desperate to touch Jesus. She had sought out many doctors, and not one could cure her. She had faith and believed that if she touched the hem of His robe, she would be healed.
Full of shame, the nameless woman crawled through the crowd toward Jesus. She came up behind Him and stretched her arm to touch a scrap of His garment. Jesus stopped suddenly and asked, “Who touched me?” All motion ceased. Peter spoke up, “Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you.” Jesus knew His healing power had “gone out” from Him and touched the woman’s issue of blood. His healing power was deliberate.
Jesus responded with a question, “Who touched me?” Scholars debate what His response means. In this scenario, the words “gone out” mean flowed through, not drained from, Jesus. This scene shows us that Jesus is omnipotent.
God is omnipotent (omni-all, potent—power), and He not only has ultimate power over all things but is also the source of all power. Though He sets limits on all creation, He Himself is limitless in strength, wisdom, love, holiness, and the ability to perform His sovereign will.
The despairing woman hid, hoping that no one would notice her while she was in a ceremonially unclean state, a serious taboo (Leviticus 15:25-30). Jesus didn’t let her go unnoticed. If He had, He would’ve missed a great teaching moment. Jesus’ cloak wasn’t magical; it was her faith in Jesus that healed her.
Jesus addresses her tenderly as "Daughter," affirming her faith and instructing her to go in peace. This breathtaking moment highlights both her physical healing and the personal relationship Jesus offers. At last, she is no longer unclean, and she is able to join society again (Luke 8:48).
This story emphasizes the importance of faith in receiving healing and grace. Although this healing occurs in a public but personal moment, Jesus acknowledges her in front of the crowd, affirming her value and worth. This touch of Jesus reveals His power and personal nature to include everyone who is suffering. Jesus doesn’t just heal her physically but also acknowledges her spiritually and emotionally. He is all-powerful and responds to multiple needs simultaneously.
