Why the Cross?

DAY 3 OF 22

The Power of the Cross

Have you ever been insulted or ridiculed because of the Cross? When people believe that they can earn their way to heaven, they belittle God's wisdom. When people believe they can save themselves, the thought of God coming in human form, dying on a Cross, and rising from the dead to provide forgiveness of sin seems foolish to them.

Paul warns us of this in 1 Corinthians: For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18).

The Cross transforms lives. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls (1 Peter 2:24-25).

Without the Cross, there is no forgiveness of sin, no salvation. There can be no relief from guilt; no peace of mind; no eternal life with God in heaven. Thank God today for His precious and amazing gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Prayer: God, thank You for the transforming power of the Cross. Thank You for the costly gift of eternal life. Amen.

Having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross (Colossians 2:14).

About this Plan

Why the Cross?

“The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (I Corinthians 1:18, NIV). The Cross of Christ is the central event of history, but it has also been a source of controversy and offense. In this stirring devotional series, Michael Youssef inspires our appreciation for the offending, redeeming, and very personal work Christ accomplished on the cross. These messages will ground believers in the basis of their faith while guiding unbelievers to a better understanding of the death of Christ on the cross.
