The Heavenly Host: Devotions From Time Of Grace MinistrySýnishorn
God’s agents
Does God need the angels? Hmm. I suppose not. God could create and run his universe without them simply by expressing his will through his word. His word alone could suffice to translate his thoughts into reality.
But it pleases God to work his will through agents who love to be on his team. The angels view executing his plans and designs as a privilege, not punishment. It is service, not slavery. It is a holy mission, not just dull mandate. They are almost as passionate about their work as God is. Scripture tells us that they shout with joy over one sinner who repents.
In some ways they seem way above us: they shine in holiness while we have sinful dirt on our faces; they fly at the speed of light while we limp one step at a time; they airily dart back and forth between heaven and earth while we are still heavy and earthbound. But we are God’s family, and they are not. Christ was incarnate to save people, not the evil angels. And thus God’s heavenly host is working not just for God but for us! “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14).
The armies of heaven who attend you are one more immense example of how valuable you are to God and the lengths to which he will go to get you home safely.
