Casting Crowns - A Live Worship ExperienceSýnishorn
Called Me Higher
The first time I ever heard this song, it immediately registered as a doer. What I mean by that is that Juan and Melody DeVevo, Chris Huffman, and Josh Mix from our band help lead worship in our church. We also lead in Thrive Student Worship on Wednesday nights. We sing Casting Crowns songs every week because everyone has heard them all. We’re always on the lookout for new songs that will resonate with the church, and we’re picky about them. Every once in a while we’ll be listening to a worship record or attend an event and hear a new song we love. When we realize a new song is perfect for worship in our church, we’ll look at each and say, “Doer.”
The first lines in this song convict me. Sure, we all could just sit and wait for all of God’s blessings. I could just sit tight, right where I am, and hope to sense God’s presence. That describes many people I encourage every week, and it describes me too. It’s so much easier to sit and wait on God’s blessings. If we sit right where we are, we figure everything will be fine. God will love us right here, right?
I think of Peter on the Mount of Transfiguration. He said, “Man, it’s so good for us to be here. Why don’t we just build some tents and stay up here?” And Jesus said, in effect, “No, we’ve got to get back down to the people.”
It’s easy to get comfortable where we are. We may not voice it or even think it, but our lives often say, “I have my quiet time, I have my favorite songs, and I have my circle of friends. I feel so good about where everything is right now, and I’m content.” But could it be that God is calling us deeper into something a little less comfortable? Could God be tugging us toward people who don’t love us back or toward something a little farther out in the deep end from where we are right now?”
>This song feels like a tug, like God is nudging me and saying, “Let’s see where it goes if you take one more step.” He will always call us higher and deeper—deeper into Bible study, deeper into serving, deeper into surrender. Deeper into him.
