Lè sa a, tout chèf lame yo ansanm ak Jokanan, pitit Kareja a, ak Jezanya, pitit Ochaya a ak tout moun yo, gran kou piti, y'al bò kote pwofèt Jeremi, yo di l konsa: — Tanpri, fè sa n'ap mande ou la a. Lapriyè Senyè a, Bondye ou la, pou nou. Lapriyè pou ti rès moun ki chape yo. Paske, jan ou ka wè l la, nou te anpil, kounyeya se yon ti ponyen moun nou ye. Mande Senyè a, Bondye ou la, pou l fè nou konnen ki chemen pou n pran, kisa pou n fè. Jeremi reponn yo: — Dakò. Mwen pral lapriyè Senyè a, Bondye nou an, jan nou mande m lan. Apre sa, m'a fè nou konnen repons Senyè a ban nou. Mwen p'ap kache nou anyen. Yo di Jeremi konsa: — Si nou pa fè tou sa Senyè a, Bondye ou la, va di ou pou nou fè, se pou Senyè a kanpe pou l akize nou. Lè sa a, la gen rezon l nan pla men l. Se nou menm ki mande ou pou lapriyè Senyè a pou nou. Kit sa fè nou plezi, kit sa pa fè nou plezi, se pou nou koute sa Senyè a, Bondye nou an, va di nou. Konsa, tout bagay va mache byen pou nou, si nou koute l. Dis jou apre, Senyè a bay Jeremi repons lan. Jeremi rele Jokanan, pitit Karejak la, ak tout lòt chèf lame ki te avè l yo ansanm ak tout pèp la, gran kou piti. Li di yo: — Nou te voye m al lapriyè Senyè a, Bondye pèp Izrayèl la, pou m te mande l kichòy pou nou. Men repons li bay: Si nou vle rete nan peyi sa a, m'ap mete nou kanpe ankò. Mwen p'ap kraze nou. M'ap fè nou pran rasin ankò, mwen p'ap dechouke nou. Paske malè mwen te voye sou nou an ban m gwo lapenn. Kounyeya, nou pa bezwen tranble devan wa Babilòn lan. Nou pa bezwen pè l. Se mwen menm, Senyè a, k'ap pale ak nou. Mwen la avèk nou pou sove nou, pou delivre nou anba men l. Paske mwen gen bon kè, m'a fè l gen pitye pou nou, l'a kite nou tounen lakay nou. Se mwen menm Senyè a ki di sa.

Alors tous les officiers des groupes armés, en particulier Yohanan, fils de Caréa, et Yezania , fils de Hochaya, ainsi que tous ceux qui étaient là, petits et grands, sont allés trouver le prophète Jérémie. Ils lui ont dit : « S’il te plaît, accepte notre demande ! Prie le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu pour nous qui sommes restés en vie. Nous sommes seulement un petit nombre, comme tu peux le voir. Demande au SEIGNEUR ton Dieu de nous montrer où nous devons aller et ce que nous devons faire. » Le prophète Jérémie leur a répondu : « J’ai entendu ! Je vais prier le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu comme vous le demandez. Ensuite, je vous ferai connaître la réponse du SEIGNEUR, je ne vous cacherai rien. » Ils ont dit à Jérémie : « Nous promettons de faire exactement ce que le SEIGNEUR ton Dieu nous dira par ton intermédiaire. Qu’il soit le témoin vrai et sûr de notre promesse ! Nous te chargeons de consulter le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu. Nous ferons ce qu’il nous dira, que cela nous plaise ou non. Alors tout ira bien pour nous, car nous écouterons le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu. » Dix jours plus tard, le SEIGNEUR a adressé sa parole à Jérémie. Celui-ci a appelé Yohanan, fils de Caréa, avec les autres officiers qui l’accompagnaient, ainsi que les autres gens qui étaient là, petits et grands. Il leur a dit : « Vous m’avez chargé de présenter votre demande au SEIGNEUR, Dieu d’Israël. Voici ce qu’il dit : “Si vous acceptez de rester dans ce pays, je ne le détruirai plus, je rebâtirai votre peuple. Je ne vous arracherai plus, je vous replanterai. Je regretterai tout le mal que je vous ai fait. Maintenant, n’ayez plus peur du roi de Babylone. Moi, le SEIGNEUR, je le déclare : n’ayez plus peur de lui. En effet, je suis avec vous pour vous sauver et vous délivrer de son pouvoir. J’agirai pour qu’il soit bon avec vous. Il aura pitié de vous et il vous laissera revenir sur votre territoire.” »

Then all the army officers, including Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest approached Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, “Please hear our petition and pray to the LORD your God for this entire remnant. For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few are left. Pray that the LORD your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.” “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will certainly pray to the LORD your God as you have requested; I will tell you everything the LORD says and will keep nothing back from you.” Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the LORD your God sends you to tell us. Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the LORD our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well with us, for we will obey the LORD our God.” Ten days later the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah. So he called together Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him and all the people from the least to the greatest. He said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition, says: ‘If you stay in this land, I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you, for I have relented concerning the disaster I have inflicted on you. Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear. Do not be afraid of him, declares the LORD, for I am with you and will save you and deliver you from his hands. I will show you compassion so that he will have compassion on you and restore you to your land.’

Alors tous les chefs des troupes ainsi que Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, Yezania, fils de Hoshaya, et tout le peuple, au grand complet, se rendirent auprès du prophète Jérémie et lui dirent : Veuille accéder à notre requête : prie l’Eternel ton Dieu pour ce reste que nous sommes ! Car nous étions nombreux et nous sommes réduits à bien peu de chose, comme tu peux le constater toi-même. Que l’Eternel, ton Dieu, nous fasse savoir quel chemin nous devons suivre et ce que nous avons à faire. Le prophète Jérémie leur répondit : C’est entendu, je vais prier l’Eternel votre Dieu pour vous, comme vous me l’avez demandé, et je vous communiquerai tout ce que l’Eternel vous répondra, sans rien vous en cacher. De leur côté, ils dirent à Jérémie : Que l’Eternel soit contre nous un témoin véridique et fidèle si nous n’obéissons pas à tout ce que l’Eternel ton Dieu te chargera de nous dire. Que cela nous plaise ou non, nous obéirons à l’Eternel que nous te chargeons de consulter. Car nous nous en trouverons bien si nous obéissons à l’Eternel notre Dieu. Dix jours plus tard, l’Eternel adressa la parole au prophète Jérémie. Celui-ci fit venir Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, et tous les chefs de troupes qui étaient avec lui et tout le peuple au grand complet, et il leur dit : Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, à qui vous m’avez envoyé pour présenter votre requête : Si vous restez dans ce pays, je construirai en votre faveur et ne vous y détruirai pas ; je vous y implanterai et ne vous en arracherai pas. Car je renoncerai à vous faire du mal comme je vous en ai fait. Ne craignez plus le roi de Babylone dont vous avez peur ! Non, n’ayez pas peur de lui, l’Eternel le déclare, car je suis avec vous : je vous sauverai et je vous délivrerai de lui. Je vous témoignerai de la compassion afin qu’il vous traite avec compassion et qu’il vous laisse retourner sur vos terres.
