Se konfyans nan Bondye ki fè Abraram te obeyi lè Bondye rele li. Li pati al nan peyi Bondye ta pral ba li pou eritaj la. Li leve, li kite peyi li san li pa te konnen ki bò li ta prale ojis. Paske li te gen konfyans nan Bondye, se anba tant twal li te rete. Li t'ap viv nan peyi Bondye te pwomèt li a tankou yon etranje ki depasaj. Se konsa Izarak ak Jakòb te fè tou, yo menm ki te resevwa menm pwomès la nan men Bondye. Paske, Abraram menm t'ap tann lavil ki gen bon fondasyon solid la. Se Bondye ki te fè plan lavil sa a, epi se li menm tou ki te bati li. Se konfyans nan Bondye ki fè Sara te rive fè pitit, atout li pa te kapab epi li te fin depase laj. Li te sèten Bondye t'ap kenbe pwomès li. Se konsa, yon sèl nonm ki te tou fin mouri rive gen kantite pitit pitit moun pa ka konte: yo tankou zetwal nan syèl la, yo tankou grenn sab bò lanmè. Tout moun sa yo mouri ak konfyans pou Bondye nan kè yo. Yo pat gentan resevwa benediksyon Bondye te pwomèt yo, men yo wè benediksyon yo byen lwen, yo salwe yo delwen. Yo tout te deklare se etranje depasaj sou latè yo ye, tankou moun yo depòte. Lè yo t'ap pale konsa, yo te tou fè moun wè yo t'ap chache yon peyi ki peyi pa yo. Si yo te regrèt latè apre yo te fin kite l, yo ta ka gen chans tounen ladan l ankò. Okontrè, yo te dèyè yon lòt peyi ki pi bon, sa vle di: peyi ki nan syèl la. Se konfyans nan Bondye ki fè Izarak te bay Jakòb ak Ezayi benediksyon pou pi devan. Se konfyans nan Bondye ki fè Jakòb, lè li santi li pral mouri, atout li te sou baton li, li te beni pitit Jozèf yo yonn dèyè lòt. Abraham a cru en Dieu, alors il a répondu à son appel, il a obéi. Il est parti vers un pays que Dieu devait lui donner à posséder, et il est parti sans savoir où il allait. Abraham a cru en Dieu, alors il est allé habiter comme un étranger dans le pays promis par Dieu. Il a habité sous des tentes avec Isaac et Jacob. Eux aussi ont reçu la même promesse qu’Abraham. Abraham attendait la ville qui a des fondations solides . Et c’est Dieu qui a fait les plans de cette ville, c’est lui qui l’a construite. Sara a cru en Dieu, alors Dieu l’a rendue capable d’avoir un enfant. Pourtant elle était très vieille, mais elle était sûre d’une chose : Dieu tient ses promesses. C’est pourquoi un seul ancêtre, Abraham, qui allait bientôt mourir, a donné la vie à une grande famille. Les enfants de cette famille sont aussi nombreux que les étoiles du ciel ou que les grains de sable au bord de la mer, et on ne peut pas les compter. Tous ces gens sont morts en croyant en Dieu. Ils n’ont pas reçu les biens que Dieu avait promis, mais ils les ont vus et les ont salués de loin. Et ils ont affirmé qu’ils étaient des étrangers et des voyageurs sur la terre . En affirmant cela, ils montraient clairement qu’ils cherchaient une patrie. Ils ne pensaient pas à celle qu’ils avaient quittée. Sinon, ils avaient bien le temps de retourner chez eux ! En fait, c’est une patrie meilleure qu’ils cherchaient, c’est la patrie du ciel. C’est pourquoi Dieu n’a pas honte d’être appelé leur Dieu. En effet, il leur a préparé une ville. Abraham a cru en Dieu. Mais Dieu voulait voir ce qu’Abraham allait faire, et il lui a demandé d’offrir Isaac en sacrifice. Alors Abraham a offert son fils unique, pourtant il avait déjà reçu les promesses de Dieu. En effet, Dieu lui avait dit : « Par Isaac, tu auras des fils qui porteront ton nom. » Mais Abraham a pensé : Dieu a même le pouvoir de réveiller quelqu’un de la mort. C’est pourquoi Dieu lui a rendu son fils, comme si celui-ci revenait de la mort. Isaac a cru en Dieu, alors il a béni Jacob et Ésaü pour des événements à venir. Jacob a cru en Dieu, alors, au moment de mourir, il a béni tous les fils de Joseph, l’un après l’autre. Et, en s’appuyant sur son bâton, il a adoré Dieu. Joseph a cru en Dieu. Alors, à la fin de sa vie, il a parlé du moment où les Israélites allaient quitter l’Égypte. Et il a donné des ordres pour dire ce qu’on devait faire de son corps.

Bondye te gentan di l: “Se pa mwayen Izarak mwen pral ba w pitit pitit.” Abraram te tou pare pou ofri sèl pitit gason l lan. Li te fè sa, paske li te fè Bondye konfyans. Li te kwè Bondye te ka resisite moun ki mouri. Nan yon sans, nan moman lè Bondye te anpeche Abraram touye Izaak la, se kòmsi se resisite Bondye te resisite l. Izarak te gen lafwa nan Bondye lè li te beni Jakòb ak Ezayi pou bagay ki te gen pou rive pita. Jakòb te gen lafwa nan Bondye. By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death. By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future. By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff. By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.

Par la foi, Abraham a obéi à l’appel de Dieu qui lui ordonnait de partir pour un pays qu’il devait recevoir plus tard en héritage. Il est parti sans savoir où il allait. Par la foi, il a séjourné en étranger dans le pays qui lui avait été promis, vivant sous des tentes, de même qu’Isaac et Jacob qui sont héritiers avec lui de la même promesse. Car il attendait la cité aux fondements inébranlables dont Dieu lui-même est l’architecte et le constructeur. Par la foi, Sara, elle aussi, qui était stérile, a été rendue capable de devenir mère alors qu’elle en avait depuis longtemps passé l’âge. En effet, elle était convaincue que celui qui avait fait la promesse est fidèle. C’est pourquoi aussi, d’un seul homme – plus encore : d’un homme déjà marqué par la mort – sont issus des descendants aussi nombreux que les étoiles du ciel et que les grains de sable qu’on ne saurait compter sur le rivage de la mer . C’est dans la foi que tous ces gens sont morts sans avoir reçu ce qui leur avait été promis. Mais ils l’ont vu et salué de loin, et ils ont reconnu qu’ils étaient eux-mêmes étrangers et voyageurs sur la terre . Ceux qui parlent ainsi montrent clairement qu’ils recherchent une patrie. En effet, s’ils avaient eu la nostalgie de celle qu’ils avaient quittée, ils auraient eu l’occasion d’y retourner. En fait, c’est une meilleure patrie qu’ils désirent, c’est-à-dire la patrie céleste. Aussi Dieu n’a pas honte d’être appelé « leur Dieu », et il leur a préparé une cité. Par la foi, Abraham a offert Isaac lorsque Dieu l’a mis à l’épreuve. Oui, il était en train d’offrir son fils unique, lui qui avait eu la promesse, et à qui Dieu avait dit : C’est par Isaac que te sera suscitée une descendance . Dieu, estimait-il, est assez puissant pour ressusciter un mort. Et son fils lui a été rendu : c’est une préfiguration. Par la foi aussi, Isaac a béni Jacob et Esaü, en vue de l’avenir. Par la foi, Jacob a béni, peu avant sa mort, chacun des fils de Joseph et s’est prosterné pour adorer Dieu, en prenant appui sur l’extrémité de son bâton . Par la foi, Joseph, à la fin de sa vie, a évoqué la sortie d’Egypte des descendants d’Israël, et a donné des instructions au sujet de ses ossements.
