Konsa, se papa l menm ki te fè l pati kite Fon Ebwon an. Lè Jozèf rive Sichèm, li pèdi wout li nan savann lan, li kontre ak yon nonm ki mande l: — Kisa w'ap chache konsa? Jozèf reponn li: — M'ap chache frè m yo. Tanpri, di m ki kote yo mennen bèt yo al manje. Nonm lan di l: — Yo te isit la wi, men yo pati deja. Mwen tande yo t'ap di yo pral Dotan. Jozèf pati dèyè frè l yo, li jwenn yo Dotan. Men, anvan Jozèf te rive, yo te gentan wè l byen lwen ap vini. Yo fè konplo pou yo touye l. Yonn di lòt: — Hey mesye! Men nonm rèv la ap vini! Annou wè. N'ap touye l, n'ap jete kadav la nan yonn nan pi yo. Epi n'a di se bèt nan bwa ki touye l. Konsa n'a wè si sa l te wè nan rèv li yo va rive vre. Les frères de Joseph vont à Sichem pour garder les moutons et les chèvres de leur père Jacob. Un jour, Jacob dit à Joseph : « Tes frères gardent le troupeau près de Sichem. Va les voir de ma part. » Joseph répond : « Je veux bien, père. » Jacob dit encore : « Va voir si tes frères sont en bonne santé et si le troupeau va bien. Puis rapporte-moi des nouvelles. » Jacob envoie Joseph depuis la vallée d’Hébron. Quand Joseph arrive près de Sichem, un homme le rencontre. Joseph cherche son chemin dans la campagne. L’homme lui demande : « Qu’est-ce que tu cherches ? » Joseph répond : « Je cherche mes frères. Dis-moi où ils sont avec le troupeau. » L’homme lui répond : « Ils sont partis d’ici. Je les ai entendus dire : “Allons à Dotan.” » Joseph part à la recherche de ses frères et il les trouve à Dotan. Ses frères le voient de loin. Avant que Joseph arrive près d’eux, ils préparent sa mort en secret. Ils se disent entre eux : « Tiens, voilà le rêveur ! Maintenant allez, tuons-le et jetons-le dans un puits ! Nous dirons qu’une bête sauvage l’a dévoré. Ensuite, nous verrons bien si ses rêves se réalisent. » Ruben les entend. Il veut sauver Joseph, et il dit : « Ne le tuons pas ! » Puis il ajoute : « Ne le faites pas mourir ! Jetez-le dans un puits du désert, mais ne touchons pas à sa vie ! » Ruben veut sauver Joseph de leurs mains et le ramener à son père. Quand Joseph arrive près de ses frères, ils lui arrachent le magnifique vêtement brodé qu’il porte. Ils prennent Joseph et ils le jettent dans un puits. Ce puits est vide, sans eau. Ensuite, ils s’assoient pour manger. Ils aperçoivent un groupe d’Ismaélites qui viennent de Galaad. Leurs chameaux transportent plusieurs produits : de la gomme, de la résine et du ladanum . Les Ismaélites vont les vendre en Égypte. Juda dit à ses frères : « Quel intérêt est-ce que nous avons à tuer notre frère et à cacher sa mort ? Il vaut mieux le vendre aux Ismaélites. Mais ne touchons pas à sa vie ! C’est notre frère. Il est de même sang que nous. » Les frères de Juda sont d’accord avec lui. Des commerçants du pays de Madian passent par là. Ils retirent Joseph du puits et le vendent aux Ismaélites pour 20 pièces d’argent. Les Ismaélites emmènent Joseph en Égypte.

Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem, and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.” “Very well,” he replied. So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron. When Joseph arrived at Shechem, a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?” He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?” “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’ ” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father. So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing— and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it. As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt. Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed. So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

Les frères de Joseph allèrent faire paître les troupeaux de leur père dans la région de Sichem. Israël dit à Joseph : Tes frères font paître les troupeaux à Sichem  ; va, je veux t’envoyer vers eux. Joseph répondit : J’y vais. Son père lui dit : Va voir comment se portent tes frères et comment vont les troupeaux. Tu m’en rapporteras des nouvelles. Il l’envoya donc depuis la vallée d’Hébron et Joseph se rendit à Sichem. Un homme l’y rencontra, alors qu’il errait dans la campagne. Il lui demanda : Que cherches-tu ? – Je cherche mes frères, lui dit-il, peux-tu me dire où ils font paître leurs troupeaux ? – Ils sont partis d’ici, lui répondit l’homme, et je les ai entendus dire : « Allons vers Dotân. » Joseph partit donc à la recherche de ses frères et les trouva à Dotân. Ceux-ci l’aperçurent de loin. Avant qu’il ne soit près d’eux, ils complotèrent de le faire mourir. – Voilà le maître-rêveur qui arrive, se dirent-ils les uns aux autres. C’est le moment ! Allez, tuons-le et jetons-le dans une citerne, nous dirons qu’une bête féroce l’a dévoré. On verra bien alors ce qu’il advient de ses rêves ! Lorsqu’il entendit cela, Ruben chercha à sauver Joseph. Il dit : Ne portons pas atteinte à sa vie ! Il ajouta : Ne répandez pas le sang ! Jetez-le dans cette citerne qui se trouve dans le désert, mais ne portez pas la main sur lui ! Il avait l’intention de le sauver pour le renvoyer à son père. Dès que Joseph eut rejoint ses frères, ils le dépouillèrent de sa tunique, cette tunique splendide qu’il portait. Ils se saisirent de lui et le jetèrent au fond de la citerne. Elle était vide ; il n’y avait pas d’eau dedans. Puis ils s’assirent pour manger. En regardant au loin, ils aperçurent une caravane d’Ismaélites venant de la région de Galaad et dont les chameaux étaient chargés de gomme, de baume et de myrrhe, qu’ils transportaient en Egypte. Alors Juda dit à ses frères : Quel intérêt avons-nous à tuer notre frère et à cacher sa mort ? Vendons-le plutôt aux Ismaélites. Ne portons pas la main sur lui, car c’est notre frère, il est de même sang que nous. Ses frères furent d’accord et, lorsque les marchands madianites passèrent, ils hissèrent Joseph hors de la citerne et le vendirent aux Ismaélites pour vingt pièces d’argent. Ceux-ci l’emmenèrent en Egypte.
