Lè ti gason an vin gran ti bway, li mennen l bay fi farawon an ki adopte l pou pitit li. Lè sa a, fi farawon an di: — Se nan dlo mwen wete l. Se konsa, li rele l Moyiz. Lè sa a, Moyiz te gentan majè. Yon jou, li soti pou l'al vizite moun pèp Izrayèl parèy li yo. Li wè jan yo t'ap fè yo travay di. Li wè yon moun ejipsyen ki t'ap bimen yon ebre anba kou, yonn nan moun parèy li yo. Li voye je l adwat, li voye je l agòch, li pa wè pèsonn. Li touye moun pèyi Lejip la, li fouye yon twou nan sab la, li kache kadav la. Nan denmen, li sòti ankò, li wè de ebre ki t'ap goumen. Li di sa ki te antò a: — Poukisa w'ap maltrete moun menm ras ak ou konsa? Men, nonm lan reponn li: — Kilès ki mete ou chèf pou kòmande nou? Gen lè ou vle touye m menm jan ou te touye moun peyi Lejip la? Moyiz vin pè, li di nan kè l: — Aa! Gen moun ki konnen sa m te fè a! Farawon an pran nouvèl sa k te pase. Li t'ap chache Moyiz pou touye l. Men Moyiz chape kò l anba men l, l'al rete nan peyi Madyan. Rive la, li chita bò yon pi.

Un homme de la tribu de Lévi se marie avec une femme de la même tribu. Cette femme devient enceinte et elle met au monde un garçon. Elle voit que l’enfant est beau. Alors elle le cache pendant trois mois. Mais elle ne peut pas le cacher plus longtemps. Elle prend donc un panier fait avec des tiges de papyrus . Elle le recouvre avec du goudron et de la colle. Puis elle met le bébé dedans et va poser le panier parmi les roseaux, au bord du Nil. La sœur de l’enfant reste un peu plus loin pour voir ce qui se passera. Plus tard, la fille du roi d’Égypte descend vers le Nil pour se baigner. Pendant ce temps, les femmes qui sont avec elle se promènent le long du fleuve. La princesse aperçoit le panier au milieu des roseaux et elle envoie sa servante le prendre. Puis elle ouvre le panier et voit un petit garçon qui pleure. Elle a pitié de lui et dit : « C’est un petit Hébreu ! » La sœur de l’enfant demande à la princesse : « Est-ce que je dois aller chercher parmi les Hébreux une femme pour le nourrir ? Elle pourra allaiter l’enfant pour toi. » La princesse lui répond : « Va ! » Et la jeune fille va appeler la mère de l’enfant. La princesse dit à la femme : « Prends ce bébé ! Allaite-le pour moi, et je te paierai pour cela. » La femme prend le bébé et lui donne son lait. L’enfant grandit. Sa mère l’amène à la fille du roi d’Égypte. Celle-ci le prend pour fils. Elle dit : « Cet enfant, je l’ai tiré de l’eau, c’est pourquoi je vais l’appeler Moïse . » Un jour, Moïse, devenu adulte, va trouver ses frères hébreux. Il voit les durs travaux qu’on leur impose. Il aperçoit aussi un Égyptien en train de frapper un de ses frères hébreux. Moïse regarde autour de lui et il ne voit personne. Alors il tue l’Égyptien et le cache dans le sable. Le jour suivant, Moïse revient de nouveau. Il trouve deux Hébreux qui se battent. Il demande à celui qui a tort : « Pourquoi est-ce que tu frappes ton frère ? » Celui-ci lui répond : « Qui t’a nommé chef pour nous juger ? Est-ce que tu as l’intention de me tuer, comme tu as tué l’Égyptien ? » Moïse se dit : « C’est sûr, les gens savent ce que j’ai fait ! », et il a peur. Le roi d’Égypte, lui aussi, apprend la chose et il cherche à faire mourir Moïse. Mais Moïse s’enfuit et il va habiter au pays de Madian. Un jour, il s’assoit près d’un puits.

Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him. Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said. Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” “Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.” One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?” The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.” When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well.

Un homme de la tribu de Lévi épousa une fille de la même tribu. Elle devint enceinte et donna le jour à un fils. Elle vit que c’était un beau bébé et le cacha pendant trois mois. Quand elle ne parvint plus à le tenir caché, elle prit une corbeille en papyrus, l’enduisit d’asphalte et de poix et y plaça le petit garçon. Puis elle déposa la corbeille au milieu des joncs sur la rive du Nil. La sœur de l’enfant se posta à quelque distance pour voir ce qu’il en adviendrait. Peu après, la fille du pharaon descendit sur les bords du fleuve pour s’y baigner. Ses suivantes se promenaient sur la berge le long du Nil. Elle aperçut la corbeille au milieu des joncs et la fit chercher par sa servante. Elle l’ouvrit et vit l’enfant : c’était un petit garçon qui pleurait. Elle eut pitié de lui et dit : C’est un petit des Hébreux. Alors la sœur de l’enfant s’approcha et dit à la fille du pharaon : Veux-tu que j’aille te chercher une nourrice parmi les femmes des Hébreux pour qu’elle t’allaite cet enfant ? La fille du pharaon lui dit : Va ! La jeune fille alla donc chercher la mère de l’enfant. La princesse lui dit : Emmène cet enfant et allaite-le pour moi. Je te paierai un salaire. La femme prit l’enfant et l’allaita. Quand il eut grandi, elle l’amena à la fille du pharaon. Celle-ci l’adopta comme son fils et lui donna le nom de Moïse (Sorti), car, dit-elle, je l’ai sorti de l’eau. Le temps passa. Lorsque Moïse fut devenu adulte, il alla rendre visite à ses frères de race et fut témoin des corvées qu’on leur imposait. Il vit un Egyptien qui rouait de coups l’un de ses frères hébreux. Après avoir regardé de côté et d’autre pour voir s’il n’y avait personne, il frappa l’Egyptien à mort et l’enfouit dans le sable. Le lendemain, il revint et aperçut deux Hébreux qui se battaient. Alors il dit à celui qui avait tort : Pourquoi frappes-tu ton compagnon ? Mais celui-ci répliqua : Qui t’a établi chef et juge sur nous ? Veux-tu aussi me tuer comme tu as tué l’Egyptien ? Alors Moïse prit peur ; il comprit que l’affaire s’était ébruitée. Effectivement, le pharaon apprit ce qui s’était passé et chercha à faire mourir Moïse, mais celui-ci prit la fuite. Il se rendit au pays de Madian et s’assit près d’un puits.
