Faroese

Faroese is the native language of the Faroe Islands. The Faroe Islands lie between the Shetland Islands and Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Faroe islands are an autonomous country of the Kingdom of Denmark. The language is the modern descendant of Old Norse and is most closely related to Icelandic.

History

The Gospel of John was translated by A.C. Evensen, a Lutheran pastor; chapters 1-17 were revised by A.J. Jacobsen, a professor at Copenhagen, and Chaters 1-20 were revised by a school teacher who published the authorised Bible History in the Faroese language. It was printed in double column format with chapter headings, and illustrations by Harper and Clark. It was published as Jóhannesar Evangelium by Scripture Gift Mission in London in 1908.

Digital Edition

The Faroese half of the book was digitised from an original copy in the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) archives at Cambridge. This was digitised for the Faroese Bible Society.
