A cyclical pattern in Acts
-Christian leaders rise up
& preach the gospel
-Listeners are converted & added to the church
-Opponents rise up to
persecute Christian leaders
-God intervenes to rescue the leader OR advance the church
Opposition to the Gospel
• People mocked on day of Pentecost (2:13)
• Peter jailed and told not to speak (4:3, 18)
• Apostles imprisoned and beaten (5:17, 40)
• Stephen seized and martyred (6-7)
• Persecution against the church (8:1)
• Paul: Cyprus, Pisidian Antioch, Iconium, Lystra, Derbe, Thessalonica, Berea, Corinth, Ephesus, etc., and now Jerusalem (13-23)
take courage (tharseo)
─ literally, be strong of heart.
─ not as much "cheer up" as it is "buck up!"

Why tell this story?
• This is important information, especially if it is to be used in Paul's defense.
• Christianity has always been persecuted. This is a major theme of the Book of Acts.
• Paul is always given just enough information to keep him going. God never tells him the whole picture in advance.
