WHO THE HOLY SPIRIT IS:
1. The Holy Spirit is EQUAL to JESUS. John 16:7
2. The Holy Spirit is PERSONAL – John 16:7 the Helper
WHAT THE HOLY SPIRIT DOES:
1. The Holy Spirit brings convicts us. – John 16:8-14
- He convicts us of Sin.
- He convicts of Righteousness
2. The Holy Spirit GIVES us LIFE.
- In the realm of nature – Psalm 104:30; Job 34:14–15
- In regeneration – John 3:6-7
- In the Incarnation of Jesus – Matthew 1:18
3. The Holy Spirit protects us – In Exodus 14
4. The Holy Spirit gives us strength and power to serve.
a. In the Old Testament:
- Joshua with leadership skills and wisdom (Josh 1:9; Deut. 34:9),
- The Judges – “The Spirit of the LORD came upon” Othniel in Judg. 3:10, Gideon in 6:34, Jephthah in 11:29, and Samson in 13:25; 14:6, 19; 15:14.
- King Saul in battle – 1 Samuel 11:6)
- David - “the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward” (1 Sam. 16:13),
- Bezalel with artistic skills - In a slightly different kind of empowering, the Holy Spirit endowed Bezalel with artistic skills for the construction (Ex. 31:3; 35:31)
- The prophecies of Ezekiel - Ezek. 2:2; 3:24
- In Exile when the Hebrew Children were in the fire and Daniel in the Lion’s Den – Daniel 3, 6
- In the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s wall – Nehemiah, Ezra and Haggai.
- Finally, the Old Testament predicted a time when the Holy Spirit would anoint a Servant-Messiah in great fullness and power: Isa. 11:2–3

b. New Testament
- The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus at his baptism – John 1:32
- When Jesus returned from Temptation - Luke 4:1
- When Jesus came to preach in the synagogue at Nazareth, he declared that Isaiah’s prophecy was fulfilled in himself: Luke 4:18–19
- In miracles – Luke 4:36, John 3:34-35
- In Jesus commissioning the disciples – Acts 1:8
- Empowering Peter in Acts 2 and 4
- Empowering the disciples in Acts 3-5
- Empowering Stephen in Acts 6
- Empowering Philip in Acts 8.
- In giving gifts to believers – 1 Cor 12
- In the prayer lives of individual believers – Rom. 8:26
- To overcome darkness - Acts 13:9–11.
5. The Holy Spirit reveals God to us.
The Holy Spirit frequently made himself known by phenomena that indicated his activity:
- The 70 Elders who prophesied in Numbers 11:25-26.
- When the judges were enabled and when the Holy Spirit came upon the judges to enable them to do great works of power (Judg. 14:6, 19; 15:14, et al.).
- When He descended on Jesus as a dove at Jesus’ baptism – The Holy Spirit also made his presence evident in a visible way when he descended as a dove on Jesus (John 1:32),
- When he came as the sound of a rushing wind in Acts 2.
6. The Holy Spirit directs us.
- The Holy Spirit gave direct words of guidance to people, saying to Philip, “Go up and join this chariot” (Acts 8:29),
- Peter to go with three men who came to him from Cornelius’ household (Acts 10:19–20; 11:12)
- The church at the Jerusalem Council – Acts 15:28
- Walking according to the Spirit – Gal. 5:16–26
7. The Holy Spirit grants us assurance we belong to God. Rom. 8:16; 1 John 3:24; 1 John 4:13.
8. The Holy Spirit teaches us. John 14:26; John 16:13
- Teaching us the right words at the right time. (Luke 12:12; cf. Matt. 10:20; Mark 13:11).
- Teaching us to see with His eyes –
The Spirit revealed to Simeon that he would not die until he saw the Messiah, for example (Luke 2:26)
The Spirit revealed to Agabus that a famine would occur (Acts 11:28)
The Spirit revealed to Paul that he would suffer in Jerusalem (Acts 20:23; 21:4) and expressly said to Paul things that would happen in the latter days (1 Tim. 4:1), and revealed to him what God has prepared for those who love him (1 Cor. 2:10).
The Holy Spirit enables us to understand in a whole new way - 1 Cor. 2:12
9. The Holy Spirit unifies us
- Unity for Proclaiming the Gospel – Acts 2:42-47
- Unity for peace in the church – Eph 4:3; Philippians 4:2:1-2
- Unity in Diversity -1 Corinthians 12
10. The Holy Spirit is our comforter. John 16:7-14
The Spirit, in all of his other roles, is summed up by Jesus with just one title – Comforter.
