Welcome to the sixth and final week of our series: Praying Like Jesus.
Last week we looked at the most painful prayer of Jesus’ life; his blood sweat and tears in the garden. We encourage you to listen to that message online if you’re in a place where you feel like you’re stuck in your faith and no longer growing or moving forward.

In Matthew's account, this prayer is given to an audience at the sermon on the mount.
In Luke 11 you’ll see Jesus gives an abbreviated version of this prayer directly to his disciples.

For context: it was common in Jesus' time for teachers (Rabbis) to create short liturgical prayers for their own disciples to add as a meditation to their daily prayers.
Jesus’ disciples didn’t want to merely imitate him through memorization, they wanted to walk with God as He walked.

Hallow the Name: To Sanctify (set apart as Holy)
Your kingdom come ,Your will be done
Less of a declaration, more of a request to join God's story
In ancient thinking, a person’s name was connected with their identity, authority and reputation.

When we pray like this, we desire to be a part of:
1. God’s reputation expanding over the earth
1. God’s reputation expanding over the earth
At first, God taught only the people of Israel how to live, but he intended that they’d be a “light to the nations.”
In Christ he made His identity even more clear. Make disciples of all nations.
In Christ he made His identity even more clear. Make disciples of all nations.
The overall idea is that God’s reputation would expand over the earth as people come to know who He is. God’s reputation is critical to the message of salvation.
When we pray Hallowed be Your Name, we desire to be a part of His plan:
2. Kiddush HaShem - Sanctify The Name
The accomplishment of God’s reputation filling the earth
2. Kiddush HaShem - Sanctify The Name
The accomplishment of God’s reputation filling the earth
The next time you pray these words of Jesus, do so with His intent, that we would act upon these words.
Our desire: To be so obsessed with putting God on display that when the world sees us living our lives, they catch a glimpse of what Christ is like.
What happens when our desires don't align with our actions? If we’re not intentional about laying down our own will, we may give ourselves over to:
3. Dong the opposite - Profaning His Name
Hebrew: Hillul HaShem
3. Dong the opposite - Profaning His Name

An interesting observation: If you look at the ten commandments given in Exodus 20, you'll note that only one of them carries with it a direct threat of punishment.
This is bigger than prohibiting the use of swear words. Paul makes a scathing accusation against a group of believers in Rome
If you follow the footnotes, you’ll find harsh prophecies of Ezekiel toward Israel:
If God’s reputation spreading over the earth is of such importance as we’ve seen in hallowing His name - how destructive is it to spread a negative false reputation?
God’s mercy is suddenly magnified when we realize how easily and frequently we’ve been guilty of profaning His name in our sphere of influence.

In Closing
I hope we can all have a deeper consideration of this incredible prayer of Jesus.
When we pray those words, Hallowed be your name, Your Kingdom come Your will be done… this is our request made to the Lord: "Let us be a part of Your plan!"
When we pray these words, this is our willingness to live for more than just ourselves but to put God’s name (reputation) on display.

Questions for Reflection:
Think about your comings and goings since last Sunday. Would you say that your interactions with others have spread God's reputation?
What are some practical ways we can spread God's reputation this week?
