Week 1 - February 2, 2020 - Pastor Jeff Bender
Our Wednesday night Bible study these past few weeks have been on Worship. We are learning and re-learning aspects of worship that are renewing our desire to spend time in true worship.
I’ve been praying about this series for a while and since the response on Wednesdays has been really good, I feel that we should bring those lessons to the whole church.
Our curriculum on Wednesdays has been primarily a video series, but instead of the video, I’m just going to use the info from the video and book to teach from.
The author is Tom Kraueter. His ministry is simply going around and teaching about worship. Our worship team went to a seminar of his a few years ago.
But I feel this information is so important, so I want to spend the next few weeks sharing it with you.
He shares about a George Barna poll-2/3 of Christians couldn’t answer the question “What is worship?”
So the place to start is . . .

So the place to start is . . .
1) WHY DO WE WORSHIP?
Do we worship because that’s what we’ve always done? We’re not sure exactly why we do it, but we’ve always done it so. . .
Do we do it because we like the music?
Does it make us “feel good”?
Well the reason we worship is because God has told us that we are to do it.
If you google worship scriptures, the first page I saw said “71 verses about worship”.
Here’s just a few . . .

So the act of worship is not something we do because we like it.
We worship because God commanded that we do. Which means it really doesn’t matter how we feel about it.
When we begin to worship with a bad attitude, that will change.
We use the term “worship” usually to denote the music part of the service.
The music part, which is what we are focusing on today, (every part of our lives should be an act of worship-giving, serving, working, living-should all be done as an act of worship) but we are looking at the physical act of singing and worshipping.
So we know WHY we worship, but of 2/3 of us don’t know what it is, maybe we should look at . . .

2) WHAT IS WORSHIP?
First off, is we don’t get to define what we think worship is. God has already defined it for us. Just because we think certain things are worship, doesn’t mean that they are.
We may think that washing my car is worshipping God. And we may take great care in doing it, but according to God’s word, that is not biblical worship.
Worship honors God, is directed TO God and requires our involvement.

Every scripture that I found about worship has those 3 aspects.
a) Worship honors God
The word “worship” actually comes from the root word “Worthship” The object that you are worshipping has great worth.
There used to be a phrase I’m not sure if we say it anymore, but it goes like this: “We worship our worship”. How many have heard that?
It means that we are honoring our method and style of worship to the point that the act of worship is what we are worshipping.
We’re not honoring God, we are honoring our musicians, singers and our singing. We love our time of music so much that we’re singing but we’re not focused on whom we’re singing to.
All worship is about God and all worship must honor Him.
b) Worship is directed TO God.

b) Worship is directed TO God.
Notice to whom the worship was directed. It was a one-way worship. Us worshipping God. Notice it doesn’t not say anything about how it affects us.
What am I getting at? How often have we heard or even said “I didn’t get anything out of the worship today”? Worship is not about us getting anything. It is about us focusing on God. It’s not meant to be reciprocal.
It’s not meant to be a time where we get goosebumps or the “feel goods”. We are worshipping God-he is the recipient, not us.
And if God is the recipient, then maybe our song lyrics need to reflect that.
What do I mean? If a song lyric is relaying “how I feel”, or if it is saying “how blessed we are” then the songs are not focused on God, they’re focused on us.
And worship indicates that there is a recipient.
If we want to get into our old English class-worship is a transitive verb, which means it has to describe an object.
So the song lyrics should be ones that exalt the name of Jesus / God.

c) Worship requires our involvement
Dr Robert Webber said this about worship: “Worship is not something that someone does to us. It is not something done for us. It is something done BY us”
That simply means that we as Christians do not sit back and get entertained by the musical performance. We are not here to simply listen to others sing and (wrong word, but) be entertained. We are ALL to participate IN worship.
That means we all sing. We all join is. We DO NOT sit back and let others do it. Remember, we worship not because we feel like it or not, but told us to.
It does not mean (Like I used to think) when is the music done so I can hear the sermon because that is the only important part.
We don’t endure it. We don’t talk through it, we don’t check our phones through it. We don’t just stand there and do nothing.
Standing around and not participating is NOT Biblical worship.

And remember, Worship is not God’s suggestion. It’s God command.
Later in the series, we’ll get into what physical things are part of God’s method of worship.
Raising hands, clapping etc.
But since worship honors God, is directed to God and requires our involvement, we should clarify one thing. You can do all of those things and yet not have true worship.
There are houses of worship where they do sing, they do honor god (little g) and are participating in some form.
But those are not true worship.
WHY? Because unless we accept Jesus’ sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins, we are worshipping a false God.

If we have not been born again by the spirit of God, we are not worshipping THROUGH Jesus Christ. There are churches that don’t believe the Bible and don’t believe that Jesus is truly God, yet they have great worship.
Whether through old hymns or new choruses, if you were to just listen, it would sound great. But if they do not accept Jesus, they are not worshipping God. Because without Jesus, we have nothing to offer God.
All our singing, praising, clapping, crying will fall on deaf ears if Jesus isn’t the center of our worship.
So what did Jesus say about worship? You know the story, woman at the well. Jesus confronts her lifestyle, tells he about all her divorces, etc.
But then she tries to change the subject.
Ever happen to you? Talk to people about Jesus and when you start to hit too close to home, they go off on a tangent.

What is he saying?
First, up until this point there was only one place to truly worship God.
God set it up that way. He designed the tabernacle, the temple, the holy of holies. The presence of God was in one place and everyone had to come to that place.
But now Jesus is saying, there will no longer be one place to worship.

The location doesn’t matter. What matters isn’t a holy place, but a holy people. What is our heart attitude?
