Summer in the Psalms - Psalm 1

Summer in the Psalms - Psalm 1

This summer we’re going to spend some time in one of the most treasured books in the Bible – the Book of Psalms. They are ancient worship songs and poems that help us see God more clearly and help us engage with Him relationally. We’re kicking off this series and ending it with Night of Worship (May 26th & August 4th). We’re also challenging ALL OF US to READ through the Psalms together in the month of June and again in July. You can find that ‘youversion’ reading plan on our app – click on BIBLE tab on home page of the app or pick up a bookmark with the reading plan at Elements Next Steps table. Lean in with us this summer and see how God will meet us and stir our hearts with the Psalms.

Principle of the path = the right path will take you where you want to go;
the wrong path will take you anywhere but where you really want to go.
QUOTE: Dietrich Bonhoeffer:
“The more deeply we grow into the Psalms and the more often we pray them as our own, the more simple and rich will our prayer become.”

Solomon 2 (72,127)
Korah 12
Asaph 12
Heman 1 (88)
Ethan 1 (89)
Moses 1 (90)

-Ascent (Ps. 120-134)
-Acrostic psalms (Ps. 9-10,34,37,111,119,145)

This is a Wisdom Psalm – one chalked full of imagery that paints a picture of the person who seeks out God and pursues godliness in contrast to the one who disregards God and seeks out to live by the ways of the world.
Wisdom psalms are noted for contrasting the ways of the righteous with the ways of the wicked. This psalm presents two contrasting ways of life and the two contrasting destinies that go along with them.
Psalm 1:1 NIV
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers...

*watch the progression:
– WALKS alongside, then STANDS around with and finally SITS down among
-don’t listen to the advise, or pattern yourself after their behaviors, habits or ultimately give your allegiance to those who have no allegiance to God.
VERSE 2-3
INSTEAD: be like this

2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.

Meditate = mull over, coo, mutter, murmur – rehearsing over and over, repeating – it means that person is a person of the WORD of God (the Bible)
Quote:
"People do not drift toward holiness. Apart from grace-driven effort, people do not gravitate toward godliness, prayer, obedience to Scripture, faith, and delight in the Lord."
-D. A. Carson
==it takes intentionality to dwell upon Scripture and pursue God; no one drifts into holiness and intimacy with God. It takes intentionality in responding to the grace we’ve been given in Jesus!
This Psalm speaks to the choice before us - between 2 different ways to live. The difference lies in how we regard the Word of God.

Jesus himself drew the same distinction in terms of two builders. He likened those who refused to heed his word to one who built on sand and those who heeded his word to one who built on a rock.
Remember Psalm 1 is a wisdom psalm. Here the psalmist is pointing out: There is no greater wisdom than ordering our lives according to the Word of God. The central truth of the Word is the saving work of the Lord Jesus Christ; and our pursuit of ordering of our lives around him - receiving His grace and walking with HIM – through this life and forevermore in the one to come.
