May 26, 2019 - Pastor Jeff Bender

This is a time where we have the opportunity to bless our young people and send them off to the next phase in their lives with the blessing of God.

These services, and commencement, are truly a time of great transition in our student’s lives as well as the lives of you parents.

These days will be a time that you will remember for quite a while. Not because of something that may be said today, but because of what God does in your heart.

In our church, we have tremendous respect for our young people. We love you and appreciate who you are and who God is making you to be.

The truth is you seniors are becoming the leaders in our churches and the business owners and leaders in our communities.

You are now adults and the decisions you make will determine the rest of your lives. You are on the greatest adventure UP TO THIS POINT you will ever take.

As I thought about what I should share today, this verse kept coming to my mind -- one of the most known verse about future occurs in Jeremiah.
This verse is popular because it is designed to encourage us, but it can only encourage us as far as we know when and why it was written.

Judah had been taken into captivity by the Babylonians due to their sins against God. God had told them they would be in captivity for quite a while.

And for these people, it seemed like an eternity. They were being forced to leave an environment that for them was normal and comfortable, but God was taking them someplace else--to go to place and a future they didn’t know.

They didn’t know what would face them in the future. They didn’t know if they would get to live the lives they wanted. They didn’t know if God would still be with them.

I’m sure they had a whole bunch of unanswered questions.

You are all leaving a Christian environment. A place where Christianity is the norm and is comfortable. Most of you are leaving home. Some for college, some for the Military, some to join the work force.

All places that for you will be brand new, and maybe uncomfortable for a time and you may have the same questions.

What will face me in the future, will I get to live the life I want, will God be with me when I leave this place, home etc.

While this verse is a promise for the people of Judah, it is also a great principle, so let’s look at it for a moment.
Do we think that God has a plan for us? I believe he does. I believe that each one of you is a significant part of what God has planned for the future.

There is something that each of you have the ability, the call and the desire to do that fits perfectly into God’s plan.

Do we think that God knows what lies ahead for each one of us? Absolutely. He knows exactly where you will be in 1 year 5 years, 10 years, 50 years.
And if you trust Him for those plans, you will be exactly where God wants you to be!
If you follow God, he will prosper you wherever he leads you.

Judah was in captivity when God said all this to them. Even in captivity, God said he was going to prosper them. Prosper doesn’t always mean money or things.

The book of 3rd John tells us this . . .
God first and foremost wants us to prosper spiritually.

If we prosper materially and not spiritually, we gain nothing.
The ultimate goal of being in captivity was to bring them back to himself. To restore their faith. To stop them from worshipping idols.

And it worked. To this day, the nation of Israel does not worship idols.

God’s plan for them worked.

God’s plan for each of us is to prosper us spiritually, then he’ll take care of the rest.
Seek God and he’ll take care of the rest!
Do you think that Judah thought that going into captivity was NOT harming them? No, I’m sure they thought it was terrible harm and what was God talking about.

God wanted them to know that even though this moment was hard, that He was still with them and had their future already laid out.

This hardship wasn’t going to last forever. Not to lose hope over what may be happening now.

You will almost certainly have hard times in your lives. You will encounter things that are unpleasant to you and wonder where God is, and where is this great plan and purpose and future that he said I would have.

The things that we encounter that we think is God punishing us or God forsaking us, or that God doesn’t love me anymore or His promises don’t work for me, are simply part of life.

God never said he would take us out of the hardships, but he did promise that he would be with us through them.

And that he would use those things for our good.
We may not understand the hardships we encounter in life, but we can be assured that our father is there through it all and will make it better.

God’s goal with Judah was to bring them back spiritually so they could experience the blessings of God.
When you leave high school, everyone has a hope for what will be. We hope for a good job, we hope for a good marriage, we hope for health.

Do we hope for a meaningful and life changing relationship with Christ? Do we hope that Jesus is the center of all that I am and all that I do?

It is easy to get caught up in the world and push Christ aside, thinking that you can always catch up later, but as time goes by, that time never comes, because life never slows down.

And we miss out on what could have been.
This phrase literally means “An end and a hope”, or “a hopeful end”. The goal or plan that God has for each of us is not so much to see who starts well, but to see who ends well.

There’s a book out there called: When the Game Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box. It describes what happens if we set our sights and goals on temporary things rather than eternal things.

It is not wrong to want to be successful and have nice things, but if that is our only goal and aspiration, then you will miss out on what tremendous blessings God has for you along the way.

At the end of our lives, what can we say we accomplished? If we want to be successful in God’s eyes then our plan has to be to end well, and you can’t end well if you don’t keep pace with what God is doing.

God does have a plan for each of you. His plan is to prosper you spiritually and as that happens, he’ll take care of your needs.

God will enable you to live your lives in such a way that you will not only finish well, but you will be blessed along the way.
