Children are welcome in worship. We value their presence. For all children (big and small) we have 3 metal baskets on the tables with fun stuff in them.

Children can also attend Children’s Worship. If you’re interested in that, a First Impressions Team member will meet you in the back and escort you and your child to the Children’s Worship area.

In The City, we see the teaching time as communal. It’s not one person's time to shine but ours together with the Holy Spirit.

So two things you need to know.
The first is that in The City, there are no rhetorical questions. If a question is asked, you will be given time to think about it or answer it either in the teaching itself or later in a reflection time. You can record your thoughts however you'd like - the YouVersion app, your phone memo, a journal, post your thoughts on social media - but don’t let questions go unattended.

The second thing you need to know is YOU matter in this time of worship. When asked what makes The City different from other churches in Columbia, our belief is that we’re not in competition with other churches, we’re all on the same team. But there is one thing that is different and the difference is YOU. When you are here you make this experience richer, more textured. You bring your light and energy and questions and very heart to this space and that creates atmosphere and community for the short hour or so we’re together.
Inner circle: Relationships that matter
Jim Rohn, american entreprenuer and motivational speaker, said this: “We are the average of the five people we spend the most time with.”

The series is based on the book "11: Indispensable Relationships You Can’t Do Without" by Leonard Sweet.

Each Sunday we’ll be looking at biblical characters who possess qualities that we desperately need in our own circle of friends and influence. Hopefully, you’ll also begin to see who you are to others - what characteristics you are bringing to other people’s inner circle
Today we look at Jethro. We’re going to talk about our need for a motivator in our lives by looking at Jethro’s relationship with Moses. Today we’ll learn we all need motivation, help, and tough love, to live into our greatness, and doing what we’re called to do, to live and complete our mission and purposes in life.

Moses was a great leader of God’s people the Hebrews. He’s the one who would eventually go to the Egyptian Pharoah and say Let my people go.
Like each of us, Moses had doubt, excuses and a life with tragedy or challenge and God chooses him for a great mission!

God gave Moses a mission to return to Egypt and be the instrument God would use in bringing the Hebrew People out of Egyptian bondage and into the Promised Land. But Moses, reluctant to be a public figure again, kept arguing with God; telling God all the reasons why he wasn’t the man for this mission. But God kept reassuring Moses that it would be all right and that God be with him. Then, Moses went to his father-in-law, Jethro, and (in a tone that’s timid and almost apologetic) asks permission to go back to Egypt in obedience to God’s voice. Moses immediately receives a swift “kick-in-the-pants” from Jethro who blesses him forward into his future. Jethro pushes Moses out of his comfort zone, out of the ruts…and into the purposes of God for his life.

Exodus 4:18-20

Jethro says ;"ech l’shalom," which literally means “Go to peace.”
A more familiar Hebrew blessing "islech b’shalom," which literally means “Go in peace.”

In traditional Hebrew usage, the blessing and good-bye dismissal, “Go in peace” refers to a resting in wholeness, completion, and perfection. Many times in the Hebrew Bible also known as the Old Testament it’s used as a final “good-bye” blessing. A sort of a RIP, a “Rest in peace” blessing offered to someone who’s gone to rest in the eternal care, the eternal love and the eternal peace of God. So, it’s often used to speak of the blessing of death.

“Go TO peace/Go toward peace”, however is used to speak of pulling beauty, truth and goodness from the abyss…and is a push to make the best use of whatever life remains. “Go to peace” refers to the channeling of our energies in a way that brings wholeness, wellness, salvation to others; fulfilling the purposes of God in our lives and in the world.

Jethro’s blessing to Moses is a “Go to peace” blessing. And it’s important to keep in mind that this peace is not the “peace and quiet” kind of peace. If you want a life of peace and quiet, then you ought’a have second thoughts about answering God’s call.

Because Jesus was crucified in the name of peace and quiet. Jesus didn’t die on a cushioned cross. He was nailed to some hard wood between two hardened criminals. In fact, you could make the case that we either “go to peace” or go to pieces. In other words, we can’t be “at peace” or “rest in peace” until we go “to” peace and answer God’s call in our lives.

At times, we all need a Jethro - a friend who will give us a kick in the rear to get us in gear - a friend who will bestow a “backside blessing” upon us that gets us up and moving out of the desert and back on track. It’s so easy when life throws us curve balls to step away from the plate and hide in the dugout. But a Jethro calls us out, kicks us in the backside and back onto the field. A Jethro does this because he/she sees us wasting our potential or ignoring our call from God. A Jethro loves us enough to risk confrontation in order to get us back into the game.Let me put this in the most polite terms possible. A Jethro is a butt kicker when we need it most.

This swift kick does three things:
1) Blesses us forward into the future. One of the most powerful acts you can do is bless another person forward. You see, a Jethro is someone who gets you up and moving by asking, “Where’s God calling you?”, and then blesses you forward. A Jethro blesses you to do what God wants you to do and go where God is calling you to go so that you can receive real peace in your life. You’ll have more peace in a challenging circumstance you’re called to than an easy situation to which you are not called.

2) Reverses the curse and opens the way.
Moses needed a kick into the future, but unfortunately, he saw himself as cursed. He had murdered an Egyptian soldier. He could never return to Egypt. At some point Moses had to stop wallowing in his own personal sorrow. Moses needed a Jethro to say to go and so do we. Jethro’s boot helps us to reverse the curse. When we feel trapped, angry, abandoned, cursed, Jethro’s blessing forward helps to open the way into a new future. Sometimes their suggestion, blessing, or boot in the backside isn’t easy but it is the way out…the way to peace.

3) Propels us into another’s life.
Remember, a Jethro blesses us forward, not backward. And that forward blessing may be right into someone else’s life, someone else who also needs a Jethro.
Who do you have in your life right now who holds your feet to the fire and your hands to the plow in times of blessedness and brokenness?

Who in your life right now needs some loving motivation to get moving in the direction of God’s preferred future for their lives?
