Keep in mind this is a Pharisee lawyer who is asking the question. There was a dispute amongst the Jewish religious leaders concerning which commandment was the greatest. By asking this question they hoped that the answer that Jesus gave would turn the people against him.
Does this greatest commandment that Jesus presents replace the Ten Commandments and Jewish law?

The ten commandments are based on loving relationships.
1. "I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have any other gods before me."

To be in a true relationship with God we must love nothing more than we love Him.
2. "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain."

If we love God we will honor and respect his name.
3. "Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy."

If we love God we should dedicate time towards pursuing Him.
4. "Honor the father and mother."

We show love by honoring the relationship with our parents.
5. "Thou shalt not kill"

We are made in God's image so murdering another person is the ultimate act of hate towards both the individual and God.
6. "Thou shalt not commit adultery."

We show love by honoring the relationship boundaries that have been established between husband and wife.
7. "Thou shalt not steal."

We show love by honoring what belongs to others.
8. "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."

We love each other by being truthful with others.
9. "Thou shalt not cover the neighbor's wife."

Longing for immoral sexuality is not the way to display love.
10. "Thou shalt not cover the neighbor's goods"

Feelings of envy, greed, and jealousy keep us from loving those around us.
How do we love in a practical daily manner?
"One of the hardest things in the world is to be right and not hurt other people with it." - Dallas Willard
Jesus never presented the Gospel in an overt aggressive manner.

We have endless opportunities to demonstrate our love for others.
We lash out at entire people groups because that is easier than showing love through relational conversations.
How should we communicate love to others?
