Lesson 5:
Forgiveness Obstacles

In last week’s lesson we looked at why we should forgive.
This lesson will address four forgiveness obstacles or barriers.
Forgiveness obstacles include:

1. POWER
A. Offenses carry with them a sense of debt.
B. Some people like the sense of power that comes from controlling the situation.

2. PERCEPTION
In other words, if they don’t pay:
A. They will just keep hurting me and/or others.
B. They will never learn their lesson.

3. PAIN
A. In other words, they need to feel what I am feeling.
B. This line of thinking assumes that their pain will eliminate ours.

4. PRESSURE
A. That is, we don’t have the mental fortitude to work through the matter.
B. This occurs when we leave God out of the equation.
A Biblical Response

Matthew 18:21-35

A Biblical Response

1. Power: Knowing God is in control means we don't have to be!

2. Perception: God's grace eliminates the need for restitution.

3. Pain: Offenders don't have to feel our pain because Jesus already has!

4. Pressure: Forgiven people are forgiving people.
In Closing:

Paul did not ask Philemon to forgive Onesimus. Philemon had probably already done that. Instead Paul asked him to RECEIVE him.

• The word translated receive (proslambano) means to TAKE TO ONESELF.

Philemon 1:12, Philemon 1:15, Philemon 1:17
