This season is NOT about what you GIVE (go ahead and enjoy that part of it) – but this season is MORE FULLY about what has already been GIVEN!
4 names were used to describe the coming Immanuel (Isa. 9:6).
Each reflects the office of deity and humanity.
“Wonderful Counselor” means an extraordinary (Divine) advisor;
“Mighty God” means a heroic God;
“Everlasting Father” means an everlasting overseer;
“Prince of Peace” means a captain who secures spiritual peace and tranquility.
A counselor is someone you listen to. Someone who gives you guidance or advice on things you think are important, that person is your “counselor”.
And people will listen to the advice of all kinds of counselors. Some good. Some not so good.
BIG Truth: Whoever you listen to the most, is your greatest counselor.
So, in life - who are you listening to the most?
Romans 11:34 reminds us that His (God's) judgments and ways are unsearchable & deep. "For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor?" Paul asks.
And the question still hangs in the air to this day because He is the supernatural counselor, in a class by Himself. In any situation, in every challenge, He knows exactly what needs to be done. His plan of action is infallible and wonderfully right.
=If you're looking for guidance in life, let me introduce you to the wonder of THE Ultimate Counselor! Jesus!
A wise person is someone who listens to many counselors.
A wise person heeds the advice of people they can trust.
There are many skilled and trained counselors that can help us in life.
But no matter how good the advice these folks might give you, it’s still only human wisdom. *friends: we NEED the wisdom of God within our lives.
You see there are many “Good” counselors in this world.
But none can compare with the “Wonderful counselor”.
People were continually amazed and in wonder of Jesus…
Amazed – this word appears 35 times in the 4 gospel accounts as Matthew, Mark, Luke and John recount the life of Jesus. He came as Wonderful Counselor; not just for a day in the past, but for YOU, this day and every day in front of you! That’s the grace of God given to YOU.
When we hear the word “counselor,” we shouldn’t simply think “therapist.” Instead, we should think “strategist.” Remember, in the ancient world, a counselor was someone who devised plans to win military victories.
Jesus secured us a victory to a battle we are IN and had no hope of winning! Our battle to save ourselves, fight back against the grip of sin – we would never win on our own.
Friends, this season of Christmas – may you once again have a sharp intake of breath at moments… may the whisper of ‘WOW’ pass your lips as you consider all God has DONE for you in Jesus. May the Wonder of God’s plans and purposes keep you sharp. May His amazing grace never become dull within your heart. May the Wonderful Counselor surprise you again, and again, and again.
Jesus sends his Spirit into each believer. The Holy Spirit makes known to us what Jesus said and what he wants us to know.
Jesus is our continual wonderful counselor.
Q) I wonder, this Christmas, what guidance you might be needing?
It’s always wise to seek counsel from others, even professionals in their fields. But friend: make sure to also seek out counsel from Jesus.
Jesus wants to be your “wonderful counselor” in everyday life, but in order to be that kind of counselor to you, He must first be connected relationally with you – He must first be the child that is given, and the son that is born to you. Received by you.
Quote: Corrie ten Boom
"If Jesus were born one thousand times in Bethlehem and not in me, then I would still be lost.”
We each are GIVEN a chance, a choice to receive the Messiah who has been GIVEN to us…the greatest gift ever given.
