A Nugget of Gold - Phil Kendon
The local church may seem ordinary, a mix of imperfect people, with good and not-so-good days. But it is precious. Like a nugget of gold hidden among river stones, its true value isn't always obvious. We need to look more closely to see what makes it so special.

1. The church is precious to God
Haggai 1:7–8 (NIV)
This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the LORD.
- The prophets lamented when the temple was in ruins, the priests had gone back to work their farms, and the people had lost their moral compass.
- The whole of the New Testament describes the spread of the gospel, the planting of churches, and letters to those churches.
- In the church, we extract nuggets of gold. We are not the shop you can walk into and pick out the nice gold earrings. Here we are digging, unearthing, filtering, cleaning, removing the dirt and impurities, and finding the nuggets of gold.

2. An outward focus
- No church that is self-obsessed and greedy will ever be happy with what they have or make a positive contribution to the world around them.
- What keeps a river healthy is the constant flow of water.
- Redeemer Church partners with Genesis Collective in the Global Mission.
- God has a heart for the poor and so do we.
Philippians 4:15–16 (NIV)
Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need.
Galatians 2:10 (NIV)
All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.

Let's Apply It:
