CONVERSATION STARTERS
1.Read or listen to Matthew 16:13–20. Imagine you are one of the other disciples hearing this conversation between Jesus and Peter. What do you imagine Peter’s tone being as he makes this declaration? What questions would you have?
2. Jesus presses the disciples beyond public speculation into personal confession. Many people know about Jesus, but don’t “know” Jesus. What is the difference between having an opinion about Jesus and making a confession of faith in Jesus?
3. Jesus says he will build his Church on this “rock” (the confession of his true identity). What does it mean for the Church—locally and globally—to be a community formed around confessing Jesus as Messiah and Son of God?
