Your Kingdom Come: An Alternate Reality
September 20, 2026
Pastor Stacey Littlefield
Matthew 5.1-12
A Question to Ponder
If you could instantly swap into one alternate-reality/parallel-universe story (movie, show, or book), which would you choose, and why?
A Question to Ponder
Jesus opens his most demanding sermon with "blessings" rather than commands. How does reframing "blessed" as "flourishing" change the way you hear the Beatitudes — and does it feel like good news or does it still feel transactional to you?
A Question to Ponder
The Sermon on the Mount tells us that the Kingdom of Heaven is already ours (vv.3, 10) even before the future promises are fulfilled — that we can "begin to experience this Alternate Reality even now." What's one concrete way you could step into that Kingdom reality — comfort, mercy, purity of heart, or peacemaking — in your relationships this week?
A Question to Ponder
The sermon describes three ways first-century Jews could respond to oppression: go along with Rome (Pharisees/Sadducees), withdraw (Essenes), or fight (Zealots). Jesus instead calls for "meekness" — subversive submission, strength expressed as gentleness. Where in your life right now are you tempted toward "going along," "withdrawing," or "fighting" instead of trusting God's way?

Weekly Prayer
Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
