Pursuing the Heart of God | Grace and Justice Are Meant to Be Held Together
This week, Pastor Nathan Wakefield continues our sermon series, Pursuing the Heart of God. 2 Samuel 14 teaches us that because God perfectly unites justice and grace, His people must pursue both with humility and wisdom. Video of the worship service is available beginning Sunday at 9:30 AM at https://southviewbaptist.org/live.

1. Object Lessons — Sometimes a hypothetical exposes realities that our emotions hide (14:1-11).
• Reality 1: Life in a fallen world is complicated because every person involved is a sinner (1–7).
• Reality 2: God has written a sense of justice into every human heart, but sin distorts that sense (7).
• Reality 3: Grace is not the absence of justice, but it often challenges our natural instincts (7–11).
Action Step: Take a step back and do an attitude check. When are you likely to let your fallen nature control your sense of justice?

2. God’s Model — God’s character reshapes our understanding of justice (14:12–20).
• God’s justice has always been wiser than simplistic retaliation (12–14).
• In a fallen world things are often far more complicated than black and white (15-17).
• And so we need to remind ourselves that we often oversimplify the situation (18-20).
Action Step: Before taking an absolute position, ask, “Is this an absolute God has clearly spoken about, or am I making my own preference absolute?”

3. A General Principle — Hold justice and grace together instead of settling for pettiness (14:21-33).
• David extends partial grace without pursuing true justice (21-24).
• Absalom’s approach to Joab is pretty petty (25-30).
• Half-measures in justice and grace together with pettiness leave relationships broken (31–33).
Action Step: Ask yourself, “Am I pursuing genuine reconciliation, or merely winning? Am I reflecting both God’s justice and God’s grace?”
