This is what we do | Part 4: Believe in the one sent

This is what we do | Part 4: Believe in the one sent

"This Is What We Do" is a call to live out the faith we profess. Because faith without works is dead, our everyday actions should reflect the hope we carry - closing the gap between what we believe and how we live.

Topic: More than a claim

Big Idea: Belief is more than a claim.

Tension: A claim without proof is empty.
________________________________________

James challenges the Church when the claim to have faith without works. At the heart of his challenge is a desire for people not to fool themselves about claims of following Jesus that are empty. Sometimes this reality may just reveal a deeper problem altogether. Why do we claim something about Jesus for ourselves in the first place? What is the real reason we want to find Jesus? What if Jesus says to us. You are looking for me for the wrong reasons. What is the right reason?

What can we do to be recognized as real disciples?

Commentary:
Jesus calls out the crowd in John 6:27 for seeking Him only for more food, missing the deeper meaning of the miracle. He tells them not to focus on perishable things like fish and bread, but to pursue the eternal life He offers. True discipleship means seeking Jesus Himself, not just the temporary benefits He can provide.

Jesus explicitly gives the crowd clarity about what they should consider doing. How often are we stubborn to the point of trying to tell God what we need rather than listening to what God is asking us to do?

Believe is a verb.
Believe is us saying, "I trust Him enough to stake my life on it."

"I believe Jesus" becomes more of a claim when we:
- Trust He is the only way, truth, and life (John 10:10)
- Obey His design for our lives.
- Seek Him for the love of God's will. (not for material gains)

What can we do to be recognized as real disciples? Believe.

Reading the passage as a warning: God rejects people who only claim to believe in Jesus.

Reading the passage for clarity: Only those who do the will of the Father will enter into God's kingdom.

Reading the passage for the invitation: Believe in Jesus. To believe in Jesus, you have to get to know Jesus.
