The Arc of Scripture | Remembrance — A Necessary Component of Spiritual Liturgy
This week, Pastor Nathan Wakefield continues our series on Biblical Theology — The Arc of Scripture. Throughout today’s passages, we see that God has always given His people tangible ways to remember His mighty works, culminating in Christ’s command to remember His sacrifice through the Lord’s Supper. 1. God Commands His People to Remember — Remembering God’s work is a central theme throughout Scripture.
• Forgetfulness is a recurring spiritual danger — especially in prosperity (Deuteronomy 8:10-20).
• Remembering is a key component of our mental health (Psalm 77:11-12).
• God repeatedly calls His people to remember His mighty acts.
Action Step: Ask yourself, “What am I most likely to forget about God if I do not intentionally remember it?"

2. Special Days — God established sacred rhythms to remind His people of significant theological truths.
• The Sabbath reminded Israel of God’s creation and called for worship (Exodus 20:8-11).
• The Passover reminded Israel of God’s redemption from Egypt (Exodus 12:14).
• The Jubilee reminded Israel that God is the true owner and provider (Leviticus 25:8-13; 54-55).
• These celebrations transformed theology into regular practice.
Action Step: Ask yourself, “Do I have rhythms that regularly bring God’s truth back into my mind?”
• The Sabbath reminded Israel of God’s creation and called for worship (Exodus 20:8-11).
• The Passover reminded Israel of God’s redemption from Egypt (Exodus 12:14).
• The Jubilee reminded Israel that God is the true owner and provider (Leviticus 25:8-13; 54-55).

3. The Danger of Misplaced Remembrance — Reminders are helpful servants but terrible masters.
• The Bronze Serpent was originally a reminder of God’s salvation (Numbers 21:4-9).
• Israel eventually worshiped the reminder instead of the God it represented (2 Kings 18:4).
• Human beings constantly turn symbols into idols.
• The problem is never the reminder but the human heart.
Action Step: Ask yourself, “Have I become more attached to a symbol than to the God it points toward?”
• The Bronze Serpent was originally a reminder of God’s salvation (Numbers 21:4-9).
• Israel eventually worshiped the reminder instead of the God it represented (2 Kings 18:4).

4. Christ — Jesus Becomes the Center of Biblical Remembrance.
• The Passover pointed forward to Christ (Luke 22:7-20).
• Christ is our Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7).
• The greatest act of God is no longer the Exodus but the Cross and Resurrection.
Action Step: Ask yourself, “Is the death and resurrection of Christ the defining reality of my life?”
• The Passover pointed forward to Christ (Luke 22:7-20).
• Christ is our Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7).
• The greatest act of God is no longer the Exodus but the Cross and Resurrection.

5. The Lord’s Supper — Christ has given His church visible reminders of the Gospel.

• Unlike Old Testament memorials, the Lord’s Supper points us directly to the completed work of Christ.
Action Step: Make sure you do more than participate in these object lessons — allow them to point your heart toward Christ.
• The Lord’s Supper serves as the church’s continuing memorial of Christ’s sacrifice (Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26).
• Unlike Old Testament memorials, the Lord’s Supper points us directly to the completed work of Christ.
