Philip's Obedience
• Philip was leaving behind a lot:
· A growing ministry
· New believers
· A place where we can clearly see God working
• God was sending him:
· Away from Samaria
· To a desert road
· With no explanation
The Ethiopian Eunuch
• He was:
· Powerful - Court official
· Trusted - Oversaw the treasury
· Wealthy - Able to own a scroll
· Committed - Gave a lot up for his position
• He was still searching for more.
· All of this had still led him to not feeling satisfied.
The Journey
• Ethiopia → Jerusalem
· Around 1,600 miles
· 2–4 weeks of travel by chariot
· Was hoping to worship
• Would not have been able to enter the temple
· Deuteronomy 23:1
God Continues to Work.
• More divine intervention:
· The Spirit tells Philip where to go.
· We see another immediate response from Philip.
• He asks a bold question:
· "Do you understand what you are reading?"
· The Ethiopian's humble response
God Had Prepared the Moment.
• The Ethiopian is reading Isaiah.
· Isaiah 53 is a prophecy about the Messiah.
· Isaiah 53:3–8
• He asks the correct question.
· "Who is the prophet speaking about?"
· He wants guidance to understand it.
The Answer Is Jesus.
• The Ethiopian had been searching.
· Wealth had not satisfied him.
· Power had not satisfied him.
· Position had not satisfied him.
• Philip shares the good news:
· Jesus is the suffering servant.
· Jesus took the punishment for sin.
· Jesus was the one Isaiah was pointing toward.
The Ethiopian Goes All in.
• He responds.
· He hears the good news
· He sees the water
· He gets baptized
• He goes on, rejoicing.
· Philip is taken away.
· His position has not changed,
· But he has.
Where Are You?
• Ethiopian
· Searching for something more
· Looking for purpose
· Feeling that emptiness inside
• Philip
· You know Jesus.
· You know the Gospel.
· God is calling you to obey.
