What do you say to God when your world falls apart?
Now that punishment has arrived. It marks the most horrendous national catastrophe in the history of Judah, the most colossal break in the entire relationship between God and Israel since its beginning. The very foundations of Judah have crumbled: the country has been conquered, the Davidic monarchy brought to an end, the temple destroyed, and the people exiled from their land. No matter that Deuteronomy had envisioned it and the prophets had foretold it; nothing could prepare one for the cruel reality and the apparent finality of the situation. The burden of Lamentations is not to question why this happened, but to give expression to the fact that it did. - Adele Berlin, Lamentations
Art does not answer the impossible theological questions. When thought and reason come to an end in the face of unthinkable evil or unbearable personal loss, art provides us with the means to invent, to organize, to create a place of being where we are helped to endure the question: Where is God? - Artist Ann Bryan, Theology and Art
