The Arc of Scripture | Scripture – The Foundation of Faith

The Arc of Scripture | Scripture – The Foundation of Faith

This week, Pastor Nathan Wakefield begins a new series — The Arc of Scripture. As we inspect various interconnected passages this week, we see that the history of the preservation of God’s Words is foundational to our faith. Video of the worship service is available beginning Sunday at 9:30 AM at https://southviewbaptist.org/live.

Locations & Times

Southview Baptist Church

3434 S 13th St, Lincoln, NE 68502, USA

Sunday 9:30 AM

1. God Speaks: The God of the Universe Is a God of Words

• In the beginning, God used words (Genesis 1:3).
• Adam and Eve knew God through His words (Genesis 2:16–17)
• God made covenants using words (Genesis 9:12-17).
• God commanded that some of His words be written down as a permanent record (Exodus 17:14).
• God’s law was given in spoken word and recorded in written word (Exodus 20:1, 31:18).
• God’s words can be taken as truth (Numbers 23:19).

Action Step: Take a second and ask yourself, “Do I view God as a God who wants to communicate or a disembodied force?”
2. God Preserves His Word: Throughout History, God Has Ensured That His Words Endure from Generation to Generation

• While God did not always speak directly with His people, He did establish a standard for those who spoke on his behalf (Deuteronomy 13:1-3; 18:21-22).
• Israel was commanded to continually teach and preserve God’s words (Deuteronomy 6:6–9).
• Prophets were commanded to record God’s words for future generations (Isaiah 30:8; Jeremiah 30:2; Habakkuk 2:2).
• Failure to heed God’s Word brings disaster (2 Chronicles 36:15–16).

Action Step: Ask yourself, “Do I take God’s words seriously?”
3. God Reveals Himself Fully in Christ: The New Testament Affirms and Further Explains the Theology of Scripture

• Jesus affirmed the words of God in Scripture (John 1:1-14, John 10:35, Matthew 5:18, Luke 24:27, Matthew 23:35).
• The Apostles explained God’s role and purpose in Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:19-21, 1 Cor. 2:13).
• Peter affirmed that God had spoken through the Apostle Paul (2 Peter 3:15-16).

Action Step: Ask yourself, “Do I merely believe that the Bible contains truth, or do I recognize the whole of Scripture as the authority for my life because it reveals Jesus Christ?”
