“Why aren’t we seeing this now?” is wrestled with often among us
HOLY SENSE OF URGENCY
• We need a perspective shift - renewing the mind to the point of urgency
• Not a matter of salvation per say
• A matter of Radical Obedience
• A shift from, “I’ll do that another time” to “Jesus may return tomorrow
• This would be a great example of someone living with saved-privilege
• A shift to, “every person I come into contact has the possibility of being an angel of God.” (We have entertained angels unaware)
• How you treat the least of these is how you have treated Jesus - He takes it all personally
ACTS 2 DAY OF PENTECOST
• We have held acts 2 on a pedestal it seems, saying “this was a unique event that is not part of the everyday Christian experience”
• A pedestal can either 1) turn something into an idol [at the expense of other essential habits] or 2) allows it to collect dust [unattainable/dismissed/diminished/mocked]
• What if disobedience has formed our Christian experience in America
• Cessationism: belief that the gifts of the Holy Spirit have ceased in some way or entirely - this doctrine has been formed out of unbelief
• Show me a cessationist who has childlike faith
TENSION BETWEEN THE GIFTS VS. FRUIT (Galatians 5:22-23)
• They will know that you are my disciples by how much power you have on display if you love one another” (John 13:35)
• Fruit Of The Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control
• It didn’t say “don’t display the gifts” (if there is tension, it’s man-made)
THE BODY OF CHRIST
• Is Christ’s body disabled because He’s neglected us, or is it because we have removed healthy parts of our body (mental illness)?
• The three C’s are killing us! Comfort, certainty, and consumerism
REMAIN SOBER-MINDED
• A Sober mind has little to nothing to do with intoxicants here, it’s talking about spiritual self control - thinking with eternity in view
• Having an accurate view of this life (life is but a vapor, not thinking of yourself more highly than you ought to, Jesus is coming back soon, etc.)
• Sobriety is a mark of a believer living out sacrificial love for others
TEMPTATION OF UNBELIEF
• It is tempting to slip into a state of unbelief when either, things are going bad for you, AND when things are going really well for you
• What if the things we pursue and call “blessings” are actually keeping us from the kind of dependence on God that requires real faith?
• What did FAITH do in Acts 2? Caused the Holy Spirit to give His people power, caused many lost to be found, caused the disruption of the world economy, sin factories shut down… TEMPTATION OF UNBELIEF
THE PROMISE
• Teaches and reminds of the truth (John 14:26)
• Leads and guides “sons of God” (Romans 8:14)
• Spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12)
• Sanctification - produces fruit (Galatians 5:22-23)
• Transforms believers to become more Christ-like (2 Corinthians 3:18)
• Empowers believers for ministry and witnessing (Acts 1:8)
• In our weakness, He intercedes on our behalf (Romans 8:26)
• Assures believers of their sonship (Romans 8:16)
• Convicts us of sin, which leads to repentance (John 16:8)
• Strengthens the inner being of believers (Ephesians 3:16)
• Brings unity and peace among believers (Ephesians 4:3–4)
• Sealed our salvation - our guarantee (Ephesians 1:13–14)
• Searches our depths/thoughts (1 Corinthians 2:10–14)
• He is our Helper (John 14:16)Creates new spiritual life (John 3:5–6)
