Carrying Out the Mandate (Part 2)

Worship is an active response to God whereby we declare His worth.
• We give of ourselves and we give to God what is rightfully His: worship, honor, and praise.

Additional Elements of Our Liturgy:

Prelude: This is a time that is set aside to prepare our hearts and still our minds for worship.

Invocational Prayer: This a formal invitation to God to join our gathering and make His presence known to us.

Koinonia: Koinonia is a Greek word that means fellowship. It is a time of greeting.
• It is an expression gratitude and appreciation to others because they are joining us in the sacred act of worship.
• It expresses our love and unity in Christ.

Congregational Singing: It is the most participatory aspect of our service.
• Singing—with or without music—was a cultural thing.

The Apostle Paul’s Comments

Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you.
• The word of Christ includes those things Jesus said and taught. It is also the message of Christ. You could call it the Gospel. Let the Gospel dwell in you richly.
• The word dwell comes from a compound word meaning “in” and “house.” Let the word be at home in you.
• Dwell in you richly: Richly is to be understood in the more traditional terms of wealth. It is a treasure of your heart. It is not only a treasure, but it is to be treasured.

As we teach and admonish one another in all wisdom.
• Teaching and admonishing are very closely connected.
• Teaching has to do with instructing or imparting skills.
• Admonition has an element of teaching in it, but it also has a corrective element to it. It includes an element of advising or counseling.

Slight Differences:
• Psalms—Most likely, this is a reference to the actual Book of Psalms in the Old Testament, also known as the Psalter.
• Hymns—Hymns were basically songs of praise. They reflected the greatness of God and were, therefore, songs about God. God.
• Spiritual Songs—Oftentimes they were referred to as Jubilation or jubilus—lyrical poems which give an account of what God has done. They were story songs or odes that talked about the great things God has done.

• Psalms are directed to God.
• Hymns address who God is.
• Spiritual Songs attest to what God has done.

Sacred music, as we know it today, is a product of society, not a product of early church or biblical tradition.

As we sing, we are to do so with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

As the word of Christ dwells in your heart, thankfulness develops.

The more the word dwells, the more your heart will become thankful.

The more your hearts become thankful, the more your lives become an expression of your thankfulness.

The more thankful your heart becomes, the more it will spill out into your lives and into the lives of others.

This is the key to living out your faith.

• Debbie Foskett (Bill Foskett's mother) fell and broke her wrist. She is waiting for swelling to reduce and will then possibly have surgery.
• Randy Marshall (Dan Marshall's father) has been diagnosed and is in the early stages of Alzheimer's dementia.
• Janet (Julie Zantello & Chris Truer's sister) is recovering from a successful shoulder replacement surgery.
• Bruce Ferguson is recovering from a procedure to prepare his prostate and bladder for radiation. Pray that everything heals properly.
• Lennon McKamey is recovering from shoulder surgery.
• Maria Saldana (director of So. Haven Childcare) is recovering from surgery.
