Overcoming Temptation / Who What When How! - 1 Thessalonians 3:1-5

If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 NLT

Finally, when we could stand it no longer, we decided to stay alone in Athens,2 and we sent Timothy to visit you. He is our brother and God’s co-workerin proclaiming the Good News of Christ. We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith,3 and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through. But you know that we are destined for such troubles.4 Even while we were with you, we warned you that troubles would soon come—and they did, as you well know.5 That is why, when I could bear it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out whether your faith was still strong. I was afraid that the tempter had gotten the best of you and that our work had been useless. 1 Thessalonians 3:1-5 NLT

The longer and more we live our daily lives for Christ, the more the enemy will try and tempt us. So get focused on Christ and get His perspective on your situation.

The Temptation to Be Selfish (3:1-2)

Finally, when we could stand it no longer, we decided to stay alone in Athens,2 and we sent Timothy to visit you. He is our brother and God’s co-workerin proclaiming the Good News of Christ. We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, 1 Thessalonians 3:1-2 NLT

Our compassion for others should motivate us to do something about their situation and not just ignore them or put them off.

A mark of Christlikeness is being more concerned for another’s need than your own.

Many believers become selfish and it becomes obvious to others around them when it’s seen in their attitude and heat.

Love, serve, help and be kind to others…not just at church.

The Temptation to Avoid A Difficult Circumstance (3:3-4)

and we sent Timothy to visit you. He is our brother and God’s co-workerin proclaiming the Good News of Christ. We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith,

3 and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through. But you know that we are destined for such troubles.4 Even while we were with you, we warned you that troubles would soon come—and they did, as you well know. 1 Thessalonians 3:3-4 NLT

There’s a difference between struggling and even persecuted for Christ rather than making foolish decisions that bring about difficult situations and circumstances in your life.

Think about it…we shouldn’t be surprised when problems come our way…if we understand and follow a perfect Savior who was undeservedly crucified.

Face life’s tough issues with God and others…in that order…He will always work it out.

And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believersin harmony with God’s own will.28 And we know that God causes everything to work togetherfor the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28 NLT

The Temptation to Embrace Compromise (3:5)

5 That is why, when I could bear it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out whether your faith was still strong. I was afraid that the tempter had gotten the best of you and that our work had been useless. 1 Thessalonians 3:5 NLT

The enemy loves to use ongoing circumstances and troubles to get our minds going…to doubt God…What he’s trying to do is to get you to do is justify discouraged disobedience.

Troubles, trial and difficult circumstances will will either drive us closer to God or cause us to drift further away from Him.

Where are you right now? What will you do the next time temptations comes a knockin?

What Should You Do?
1. Anticipate Suffering
2. Fight Temptation
3. Seek Help

Dear brothers and sisters, if another believeris overcome by some sin, you who are godlyshould gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself.2 Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.3 If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important. Galatians 6:1-2 NLT
