The Road to the Cross | Cana

The Road to the Cross | Cana

he road to the cross was marked by fellowship and loneliness, by joy and sorrow, by miracles and disbelief. It carried moments of revelation and transformation, wrestled with doubt and faith, and was shaped by both arrivals and departures. Yet through it all, one truth remains: the road to the cross was the most important journey ever taken — and we are invited to walk it too.

Topic: The Wedding at Cana
The Problem: No wine.

Jesus' first public miracle was turning water into wine. But, there is more to this moment than Jesus providing wine for a party. There is a very personal, spiritual, and compassionate reason we must see in this story that ushers the public ministry of Jesus.
Context
Jesus recently recruited some disciples. Since they were from the same nearby community, Jesus, Mary, and the disciples were all invited to this celebration, likely a wedding for a family member or someone close to them.

Commentary:
This was not a small, intimate wedding with 20-50 people invited. This was likely a major rager. This was a capital P Party.

Jesus was present. God wants to be a part of your celebration. He will accept that invitation for sure.
Commentary:
Like many parties, food and drink were a huge part of what made a celebration a celebration. The wine was an essential part of the diet in the ancient world. Drinking wine symbolized peace and prosperity.

*Note
Scripture does not condemn alcohol consumption, but it does condem drunkeness. It is wise for us to remember that and also to recognize that some people should just completely stay away from any kind of alcohol consumption because they can’t handle it.

Bridging the Gap:
Imagine having to be in charge of a wedding celebration, and this is meant to last several days, but the wine runs out in the first couple of days.
Imagine that your ability to throw a party that lasted several days was connected to the public opinion the community has of you regarding your ability to take care of your bride long-term.

People likely judge you because there is no wine, and it would be incredibly embarrassing.

Commentary:
Jesus calling Mary (his mother), a woman, was but the term frequently used in a solemn and honorable sense.

That is not our problem. The Greek text here literally reads, “what is that to you and me?” Jesus is likely petitioning His mother to consider whether the request is really the kind of thing He should address with His power; He probably wants her to consider His purpose.

The timing is off. Most scholars believe that Jesus is simply saying it is not the time for me to start revealing myself publicly.

Bridging the Gap:
Isn’t it true that sometimes we have some disagreements with God about his timing vs our timing? Most of the time, we think our timing makes the most sense, while Jesus might actually be saying, your timing makes no sense at all, you just don’t know it yet.
Commentary:
Mary did not take Jesus previous response as a rebuke nor allowed the disagreement to get in the way of putting complete trust in Jesus. She completely gives it to Jesus.

Bridging the Gap:
Like Mary, we are invited to give things to Jesus rather than dictating what we want Jesus to do. This is the struggle between control and surrender.

Does this make any sense?
If I were a servant, honestly, at this point, out of curiosity or disbelief or any other reason that makes sense, I would likely say to Jesus. "How is this supposed to solve the whole we are out of wine problem? They are going to notice it is water".

Bridging the Gap:
At some point in your life, you will have to hear God asking you to obey and do something that makes no sense to you. God is going to ask you to do something that you will not understand. And like the servants, I am pleading with you to obey even if you don’t fully understand, because when you do, you are activating your faith, perhaps for the very first time, and what you might just find on the other side of that obedience will likely be what can be categorized as a miracle.
The Significance:
Jesus didn’t ask the servants to do something crazy, radical. They were merely asked to do something ordinary in obedience. Put water in the jars. Pour some out and give it to the host. That is it. Yet, the wine shortage came to an end, thanks to the power of Jesus and the obedience of servants.
hey
Following Jesus requires us to transform our very minds into seeing life through a different lens. From the lens of Jesus. Let me explain: for the servants, their obedience meant that they were doing things that did not match the result. They used these jars for water and added water to them, and Jesus said to them, “Pour some out and bring it to the host of the wedding here.” There is nothing abnormal or even extraordinary about what is happening here. In their minds, what will come out is just water, and when the host drinks the water, they are not going to be surprised when the host says, “This is just water.” But Jesus changes everything. He turns water into wine. But a servant’s obedience cannot go unnoticed.

How are we to respond to today's message:
Do whatever he asks of you. If Jesus is asking something of you, just obey even if you don't fully understand.
______

Following Jesus:

Jesus did what the Father in heaven required him to do so that we can have life. On the cross, Jesus obeyed the will of the Father, and a miracle happened. No longer do we have to be eternally separated from a relationship with God.

Instead, through Jesus we receive the miracle of reconciliation. God invites you today to make him your lord and savior, and remember that he can turn your life (water or even dirty water) into wine (transformation into the best).

If you wish to surrender your heart to Jesus. Simply profess with your mouth that Jesus is lord and he died for our sins and was resurrected from the dead. Believe this in your heart and surrender your life to Jesus. If you made a decision to now live for Jesus, we want to know. Fill out a connect card and let us know you have made that decision today. We want to walk with you.
