HABITS: No Benchwarmers: The Habit of Involvement

Big Idea: Church involvement means working together to put others first.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 – NLT Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.

Acts 2:42-47 – NLT 42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

1. Involvement in Church means that together, we focus on what’s important.

2. Involvement in Church means putting others first.

Acts 2:43-47a – NLT 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.

Romans 12:9-13 – NLT 9 Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. 10 Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. 11 Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. 12 Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. 13 When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

3. Involvement in Church means inviting others into the journey of following Jesus.

Acts 2:47b – NLT And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

ACTION (How could we live this out?)

1. Choose to make church a priority in your life.
2. Choose to go out of your way to call out the value in others.

Hebrews 10:25 – NLT And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
