Praying Through Trials & Adversities
James 5:13-18
Pastor Jerry Koller
James asks: Is anyone among you suffering? This seems to be a rhetorical question.
• Whether it comes from within or not, trials and adversities are usually not easy to deal with, especially when they result in suffering.
• What kind of a remedy does James prescribe for those who are suffering? Prayer. Then he must pray.
• This could be translated: Then he must keep on praying.
• Praying then acting has its advantage over acting, then praying.
Examples of Prayer being a priority
When you pray, may your first motivation be that God is glorified.
“Our supreme motive in our prayers should be that God may be glorified by answering our prayers, not that we may get gratification, but that God may get glory to Himself.” ~ R.A. Torrey
In the second half of verse 13, we find the second “Is...Then” comment: Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises.
• Cheerfulness does not reflect a lack of trials or adversities.
• Cheerful reflects a person’s disposition in the midst of trials, adversities, or suffering caused by them.
• The word “cheerful” comes from a word that means “to be of good cheer, of good courage, or to be joyful.”
“The mature Christian knows how to sing while he is suffering. (Anybody can sing after the trouble has passed.) God is able to give songs in the night (Job 35:10). He did this for Paul and Silas when they were suffering in that Philippian jail.” ~ Dr. Warren Wiersbe
APPLICATION
Are the adversities you are facing causing your spirit to become overwhelmed? Then follow what God’s word tells you to do.
• Pray first.
• Keep on praying.
• Pray that God will be glorified through your circumstances.
• If you remain cheerful during trial, sing praises to God.

Winter Weather is Here

If church or other activities will be cancelled due to the weather, we will send an email, text, and post on Facebook. Please be sure to check your device before heading out. Please use caution and extreme care when coming to church as the parking lot is very icy because of the cold temperatures, The front by the main entrance is ice free and recommended for drop-offs whenever possible.

Hearing Assistance Devices Available

We have hearing assistance devices available during the morning worship service which allow the user to control the volume based on their individual needs. They are available from the Sound Booth at the rear of the sanctuary and are cleaned and sanitized after each use. For questions, see Rocky Starland.

Have You Considered?

Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.

Pop Cans = Scholarships

Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
